Felt bad looking at the family from Chad ....wish I could give these kids an apple..

Well, these are folks in a refugee camp - most likely Sudanese people since that particular camp in Chad was established in 2004 for Sudanese refuges from Darfur. Chad is fairing quite a bit better economically than Ethiopia and I know that regular folk in Ethiopia are eating quite well. Hence, regular folk in Chad probably have a bit more on their plate than what that refugee family has to get by on. That still makes one want to help those kids get a better diet but I think it's a bit misleading in terms of what a week's worth of food for an average family in Africa looks like. It ain't that bad. Seeing that they presented a German family of four that spends around $500.00 a week on food (which is an aweful lot over there to spend on food in a week), they should have picked a more affluent African family for comparison.

I know it's been posted before, but I really like these pictures. I don't necessarily think these families are intended to be representative of their entire nation. I'm sure many Germans don't eat those foods, and of course I don't think every American eats so much junk. (Where did they even find people to admit to that?) What I found impressive was that the American family was relatively thin! The other thing that surprised me was that the Americans spent so much on food we generally consider to be food that poorer people eat. I mean, they spent more than twice what we spent on food (as two people) in Minneapolis, and we had a bad habit of shopping at Whole Foods and buying organic fruit etc. So maybe that lifestyle isn't as cheap as it's rumored to be.

How can you say shopping at Whole Foods and buying organic is a "bad habit"?

Even if that American family in the picture is relatively thin, it doesn't mean they're healthy by any means. I see more packaged and fast foods on their table than I eat in 6 months! And they're just shopping for the week! But I know families like them, and even worse, I know families who NEVER cook in the home, all they eat is fast food take-out. They're not fat either, but I'm fairly certain they're malnourished.

I don't have a Whole Foods or Earth Fare anywhere near me, but I buy a lot of fresh veggies and fruits, and I buy organic when I can (heck, even the non-organic fresh foods have gone up in price here in NC the past few months because of the drought!) My weekly grocery bill for just 2 of us is usally between $60 to $100. If all I bought was junk packaged foods though, I could probably shave off a few dollars every week.

Actually, I thought the German one was pretty representative in terms of what I noticed about the shopping habits of ethnic Germans when I lived there. I am just struggling to figure out if all that food was really necessary for one week for one family of four. Looks like 3 carts full at least. I also noticed that pretty much nothing was generic. Same for the US family. Maybe it was for looks, but that was probably a lot of the cost right there if they bought brand, not on sale, in the amounts they were buying them, which I feel was probably excessive.
