Consumer reports likes the following:

For excellent detection at a low price:

BitDefender $30 (download only)

Zone Labs $30

Both scored excellent in our detection tests, including recognition of viruses they had never seen. Both let you schedule scans. BitDefender scans instant messages. Zone Labs has a full-featured firewall and scans within Zip files.

For both detection and ease of use:

Kaspersky Labs $50

Kaspersky was very good at overall detection and its features and ease of use both rated excellent. It scans within Zip files by default. It was excellent at recognizing newly discovered viruses, but only fair at our toughest test--recognizing those it had never seen before.

For good protection that’s free:

Alwil (download)

With good detection, ease of use, and scanning speed, and very good features, this free program is useful for protecting multiple computers on a tight budget.

Bit defender scored the highest, followed by Zone labs, kaspersky, then Norton. These tests were completed Sep 2006.

I have trend Pc-cillin, and so far soo good!! have used AVG with success in the past. I'm no computer expert though.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I've been using the free version of Zone Labs for my personal firewall and it does the job. I still run Norton for the virus stuff.

AVG free works great for me. They have the free version and the paid version on their site. For the free version you don't get the technical support.

I have used AVG free version for many years now. It is excellent and would recommend to anyone. True, you don't get the tech support, but quite frankly, I've never needed it, so that should say something! You do have access to forums however, so you can find help that way should you need it.

The best free anti-virus program is AOL's Active Virus Shield. It is based on the Kaspersky anti-malware engine which is often regarded as #1 in anti-virus comparisons. For more check out THIS THREAD and look for the anti-virus section. There's a bunch more good info in there about securing your computer against malware.

Once your existing anti virus expires, or just prior, uninstall it. Windows will advise that you are unprotected which will generate an option to fix it. You will then get choices of 5-6 different free programs, ranging from 3 months to 1 year.

Why pay if you don't have to?

There is no best antivirus programs out there. I use Norton Anti-Virus. PC-Cillin is another one I suggest. It uses less memory while it's running, increasing productivity.

Norton used to be a good solution but everything I've read says the home version of it is bloatware nowadays. It doesn't stack up to the competition in detection tests either.

To those recommending AVG - it also used to be a decent free solution but it's slipped quite a bit. I like that it's pretty low in system resources but it's detection rate is well below the competition.

My husband just developed a hernia from laughing at that suggestion. :P

Please explain. Why does your husband laugh at this suggestion? I'm all ears...

Edit: Oh, and please tell me what anti-virus & anti-malware solution he suggests.

And, where's the evidence saying Norton is bloatware? I write software for a living, and I never heard of such things.
