This may sound horrible, but when I flew through Frankfurt in March, my flight was delayed 12 hours. There was no way my 12 month old was sitting in a stroller for 12 hours. So, I started walking around, trying to look for somewhere for her to run around. There was (may not be there now) a common area between the train station and the airport where there was absolutely nothing. A giant hall of nothing and some chairs. No one was really there, so I let her run around for about 2 hours until I wanted to check back with the gate. My flight was night flight by the time it was over with, so she just slept from the second the plane got off of the ground. Unfortuantely, I have no tips for that.

Oh yeah and security was awesome. Nothing like the jerkoffs in Philly.

Ive transited through Frankfurt, Not the best airport in Europe to have a layover. For some reason you have to wait in a line up at a checkin counter to get boarding passes to your onward destination, and with a 19 month old it was just horrible. My little one loves to run around but then we saw a dead mouse at the gate waiting area and informed one of staff at the boarding gate and he didn't even get someone for a clean up. Overall a horrible experience and will avoid Frankfurt on future travels.

Lufthansa is excellent.

Frankfurt airport is huge, yet fairly easy to navigate. If you get confused, there are plenty of workers available to guide you..in english.

They do allow smoking in certain areas, or at least they did the last time I was there (about 3 years ago).

Can't help on the one year old part.

The layover I had was the airline's fault, 100%. They were too dumb to think their way out of a cardboard box, I swear. Didn't even know the rules of their own airport, was ridiculous. Oh yes, US Airways. Stay far away from the cattle car.

There were mechanical problems with the plane in New York. So it was originally delayed for that. But then half way across the Atlantic, they realized that they couldn't use this same crew to fly us back across. So, they wasted much of our time scrambling, trying to find another crew to fly and service the plane. The flight was supposed to leave at 12:45pm. Did not leave until 12am.

There were other fun fiascos in the meantime, believe me, based a lot on the incompetence of the US Airways employees who worked there.

I've flown Lufthansa twice in 2006 and had my transit in Frankfurt and while they do seem a little unorganized with boarding, I have noticed that the Lufthansa staff is quite helpful and accomodating to those with small children and the elderly....The Frankfurt airport is big but as one other vjer mentioned, many of the airport personnell speak English. Traveling is of course a hassle and even more challenging with small children but I would fly Lufthansa again and I was quite happy with their airline and service. Well whatever airline you decide, good luck and hope you and your little one(s) have a safe journey!

Lufthansa is excellent. They provide bassinet sits for young parents. They have free alcohol on transatlantic flights in economy class :P

They have smoking areas. It is a humongous airport with lots of things to do. I flew Lufthansa, US Airways and Delta from/to FRA and never ever had a problem. :)

Lufthansa is actually nice to families with children. They give added help preboarding and after. They offer the children games or toys on board. As well as some special treats.

The airport in Frankfurt is rather easy to nagivate throu. There is a supermarket (very inexpensive shopping) and a McDonalds on the lower level near the O and S-bahns. Strolls as well as luggage carts are availilble for free.

Seeing your profile, flights to Romania I doubt will have a 12 hr layover. But even if you do book a flight, like this they are very helpful to accomdate you to find another flight earlier. Also you could take the train for less then 5 euros to Frankfurt central and have a bite to eat, look around. It is a banking district so not much family fun... but nice walking area and shopping. But remember on Sunday everything is closed.

There is also a nice bookstore in the train bahnhof with books in many languages. Good luck!

PS: Some suggestions for your child. Have them chew some gum (depending their age) or ice during take-off so their eyes will not hurt. Bring enough toys to occupy them. And enough snacks.
