Malmo seems to prefer gang warfare.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

To be honest though, soccer will usually draw the interest of kids that are not the top tier athletes in the US, not saying that soccer players are less athletic but playing soccer is not as glamorous to american kids as football, basketball and badeball

Do you know how much running is involved in soccer? How freaking far you have to run, back and fort back and forth? You have to be highly athletic. It is American Football that doesn't require much athleticism, you just have to be big enough to plow someone over.

Absolutely, soccer is an incredibly athletic sport.  I think the big myth here is that players are less likely to get injured in soccer.  Sure they don’t line up across from each other or run crossing routes over the middle, but the chances of injuries is quite high.

I remember once watching a drum and bugle corp competition and they put a sensor on one of the drummers as they went through a routine, that drummer burned as many calories in one 8 minute routine as a football player did in a quarter of a game.  Most people forget that even though football (the American variety) is very athletic, the players do have a lot of down time.  Personally, I felt that being an ice hockey referee was tougher athletically than being a player since there are no line changes for the referees, and they skate the entire game.

Did you read what i wrote?

I made a point of saying soccer players were not less athletic. What i said was top-tier American athletes will gravitate to several other sports that Americans consider mor glamorous.

For every Landon Donovan there are 100 equally talented American athletes playing baseball, football or baseball, hell even hockey.

Soccer is the worlds game, but not America’s game.

I could think you could replace “more glamorous” with “more lucrative”. I am not sure how well paid professional soccer players are here in the US, but I am pretty sure it is not anywhere near the level of football, baseball, or even basketball players.

Football ( real football)does require players to be incredible athletes. Many of the skill positions are filled by men with world class speed , strength and quickness.

Even many of the 300lb plus lineman are agile, quick and have unbelievable strength.

Most professional athletes have excellent strength and conditioning nowadays. Thirty years ago you used to see hockey players who smoked, football players with beer guts etc. I don't think you could play any sport at a high level that way anymore.

Yup. I cant pul it up at work, but their use to be a nfl lineman nick named fatso. Great clip of him on the Johnny carson show

Arte Donovan - great NFL lineman for the Colts in the late 50's early 60's
