i know a few people from denmark myself, so basically i have my own anecdotes. the assumption that i frame my world view based on media projection is insulting.

Interesting that you are not sharing their anecdotal stories.  Do they say the same thing?

Why do so many foreign students come to the US and pay for their university education?

Because their families are rich?

I did my undergrad virtually for free back home, then came to US for grad school with full scholarship. If I didn't have that opportunity, I could not have afforded to study in US.

Dark socialist overlords in CA?   (I took it as sarcastic, based on some of your other replies in the past hour.  Forgive me if I read it wrong).

It’s not odd to presume... he or she lives here and is making money now.  That means they made money in Canada in the past.  For most people, we make more money today than we did in the past (at least one would hope to improve in that arena).

of course i was being sarcastic. how is that worse than seriously referring to someone's home country as 'commie' and telling them to go back?

does it matter if they are making more money here, if they are telling you they paid less taxes in canada?

captialism - where the rich get richer and the middle class becomes the poor.  the poor become the beggars and the beggars die due to a cold.

So Socialism/Communism is better where they just have three classes, the elite leaders with all the power, the poor masses, and those that are killed off by the government for speaking out?

So did I.  And your response was on-target.  I have never lived in Canada, only visited, but I think their taxes are a bit high for my liking.  The “free health care” isn’t really free at all.

At least it doesn’t cost anything to wait in line.

Well, yes, it actually does.  If I used to make $10,000, and paid $1,000 in taxes, but now make $100,000, and owe $10,000 in taxes, my taxes are higher now than they used to be.  But surely you can see how I don’t really pay any more taxes today than I used to?

I work with a lot of people that are foreign who came to the US for school, but did not come from rich families.  There is a reason they want to come to the US for secondary education, and though the US public school system may be poor, the secondary education system is definitely desirable to many people around the world.

so you asked how much they made now because you think they don't understand how they're not really paying any more in taxes than they did previously? must be lonely at the top.

Because you are minimizing the report from a person from Denmark speaking out about their socialist paradise.  I am sure we can find some people from Venezuela to confirm this fact.  I have a wife that grew up under Communism where any information considered capitalist was considered as bad as child porn.  There is no perfect economic system out there, but I do know that monopolies are bad, and giving the government an economic monopoly is about the worst thing we can do.

basically you'll only accept anecdotes that fit your opinions. idwaf said he knew a guy from denmark that said it was terrible there. i simply said i know people from denmark too and they don't feel that way. how is that minimizing?

Likewise.  Some were rich, but the majority I knew were poor.  Lived in low income university housing like me.  Suffered what it took to get that higher education so that their families would not have to grow up poor like they did.  Living poor is a great motivator.

Ask the people you know why they are here, if life there is so good.  I didn’t mean the countryitself is terrible; far from it, it’s a beautiful place to live.  Wages are on par with the US, but so many expenses are higher than here. Taxes are higher.  Utilities are about 50% higher than here.  A dozen eggs is over $4.

I plan to visit there one day, haven’t made it just yet.  Not familiar with the tax laws for expats, but it might be a viable place to live after retiring.
