My Philippine passport would expire in July 2018 and I plan to renew it before the Christmas holidays. I intend to use my married name but I have not reported my marriage to the Philippine Consulate.

Can I report my marriage and renew my passport under my new married name on the same visit to the embassy?

My greencard is currently being processed. Can I renew my passport pending the approval of my permanent residence application?

Thanks for your input! Appreciate your help!:)

It depends on the Phil Embassy in the US. We are under Phil Emb Wash DC and they require that you report the marriage first and then they allow you to change your passport once you have completed the registration. I have heard other Embassy's allow you to do both at the same time. If you are not processing through Wash DC it's best that you contact or at least search the Embassy's website for additional details. It takes 2-3 months for each process so watch your timing if you have plans to travel.

I believe we are under the Phl Emb Chicago jurisdiction. Will contact them to verify if both can be done on the same visit. It's too troublesome to make two trips to the same destination. Thanks!

My wife was able to do both on the same day at the Los Angeles embassy.  I think she was lucky though because other

people had to come back a second day.

thanks for the link! Do you think I should wait until my permanent residence is granted before renewing my passport?

No. You do not have to wait for the permanent GC to change your passport.  One does not have anything to do with the other.

Depends.   ;)

My wife did both through the consulate in LA without any issues or delays, and I have heard people have no issue through the counsel in Chicago.  But...

As Greenbaum stated the Embassy in DC is very picky on this.

And my wife was required to have her green card and they wanted a copy of it.

My wife did both ROM and new passport the same day at the San Francisco consulate (several years ago, 2011 I think it was).

Sorry man .. but wrong again.

This from the consulate website in DC, do take note of ITEM 4.   They could use a copy of the I-797 showing they are in process of getting the green card.. but evidence is required.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Duly-accomplished passport application form, typed or printed legibly in black or blue ink
  2. Latest passport
  3. Two (2) photocopies of the photo/data page of the latest passport.
  4. Proof that the applicant is not a US/Foreign citizen (Original and two [2] photocopies of any of the following: greencard, visa adjustment, notice of action, work permit)
  5. Self-addressed return envelope, with appropriate stamps for express or priority mail with tracking numbers via US Postal Service, if Passport is to be mailed back. For applicants from the Caribbean Islands, pre-paid mailing envelope from DHL.
  6. Passport fee of $60.00 (non-refundable), payable in cash or money order made payable to "Embassy of the Philippines" (or "Philippine Consulate General", if application is made at one of the Philippine Consulates General in the U.S.).Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

So do you have to be one or the other both or none as written  US/Foreign citizen?  Further more read the whole excerpt.

Under Philippine laws, a person’s legal name may be amended through the following:

  • Change of name due to marriage
  • Change of surname of a legitimated child by virtue of a subsequent marriage of parents
  • Change of name due to adoption
  • Change of name due to death of spouse or annulment of marriage
  • Change of name due to divorce (valid only for those Filipinos who did not act as Plaintiff in the divorce proceedings, i.e. the Filipino spouse did not initiate the divorce proceedings; not valid for couples who were both Filipinos at the time of the marriage)
  • Change of name as duly ordered by Philippine courts or the Civil Registrar General

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (TO BE SUBMITTED ALONG WITH OTHER REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO CASE):

  2. Latest original passport and one photocopy of data page of passport (original will be returned)
  3. Proof that applicant has not applied for foreign citizenship (a GC does not constitue citizenship. OP is not a citizen of a foreign nation so they have rights and privileges to change her name on her Philippines Passport) , e.g. resident alien card
  4. Self-addressed return envelope, with appropriate stamps for express or priority mail with tracking numbers via US Postal Service, or with pre-paid mailing envelope from private courier of choice, if Passport is to be mailed back.
  5. Note:  The Philippine Embassy/Consulate General assumes no responsibility for any delay or loss in the mail, or while the documents are in the custody of the courier service.  The applicant should note the tracking numbers of all envelopes used and submitted.
