Hi guys ..

I am totally lost trying to source accurate information on the type of Visa I would require or where to even start ..

I hope to travel to the US on a temporary working visa but I have no idea where to begin ..

I'm just looking for any information on where to start, what I should do and how I can approach it ..

Work Visa's are actually about the simplest ones from your perspective, your Employer/their Lawyer handles it, you have a bit of form filling and attend the interview.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Can anyone tell me how it would work if you were to go on a tourist visa and then be offered employment once in the US?

Im a plumbing, heating and gas engineer and after talking with a contractor in NY have been told if I can get to the US they would be happy to take me in for an interview ..

It is not a matter of finding any job and going to work.

Go back to the USCIS link and read the descriptions of all the work visas and figure out which one you would qualify for. Are you--

an investor

Executive transferring

Agricultural worker

Nurse

Pro athlete

Movie star

Worker in a specialty occupation

Etc

Then in the left column click on that visa to learn the specifics of qualifying. Bachelors degree? Somebody so skilled there is nobody in the US they can find for that job? Keep researching. There is no short answer. You have been pointed to a source for learning, which is what you asked for. That's about all I know.. only where you can read it from the official source.

I assume you are going over on the VWP and are looking to work legally.

I would ask them have they employed from overseas and what Visa category they have used before.

Obviously a job interview, a job offer, is useless without the appropriate visa.

The most common visa for someone skilled is the H1B, if it was that one the Lawyer would get the paper work done for a 1st April submission, you would interview sometime during the summer for a 1st October start. There has been over subscription and it has gone to a lottery.

H1b does not need evidence that nobody else could do the job,

I know someone in your line, City and Guilds, he has his own business and a USC wife.

Being able to interview for a job is completely different from being able to accept it and legally work.

You can talk to the prospective employer, but you can not stay and work. The employer would need to obtain a work visa for you. This will cost the employer about $5000 and the employer is required to pay (its illegal for you to pay). It will take months if not a year to get this visa. You can not work or wait in the US based on any potential work visa petition.

Suggests you do more research on employment visas. It doesn't work the way you seem to want it to. There's no such thing as arriving on a tourist visa and getting a US job and working legally anytime soon.

Work visas are difficult to say the least. Employers have to file the paperwork and there are very few available. They become available April 1 each year and are all taken within days. But the first step is for you to find an employer that is willing to pay the money for and do the petition for you to come work. You will sadly discover very few will unless you have at least a degree and/or a special field or skill... You cannot just come as a tourist and work legally...
