The Form I-129F petition filing fee is USD$340, payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to be remitted by check or money order, with the completed petition at submission to the USCIS.

The K-1 visa processing fee is USD$240, payable to the U.S. Department of State, to be remitted in the manner prescribed by the interviewing consulate/embassy during the visa interview process.

The terms are very similar and can be confusing which can lead to mistakes that can result in all manner of resultant problems, including rejection of petitions. Should make this a sticky! I had the same question a week or so ago because the info regarding the recent change for the embassy fee confused me. Makes me sad when I see people who have had their initial 1-129F petition returned for sending the incorrect fee

What A&B posted is the correct information. As noted, the petition for the I-129F is handled by the Dept. of Homeland Security and the actual visa is handled by the Dept. of State. Also, the K-3 process is essentially obsolete at this point.

It's better to link folks to the correct departments -- petition information on USCIS, embassy/interview/visas on DOS -- than to just point to the DOS for information. That's where confusion is introduced.

I'm not sure of your point, if you have one. As A&B posted, one should read the information carefully, that's a given, but it doesn't mean it happens. And, it doesn't take away from the fact that A&B is addressing two of the common questions that have come up lately since the visa fee was reduced last month.

The confusion comes about not because of the government but because of people's insistance on using the wrong terms.

The I-129f petition fee is $340. It is not a visa application, does not result in a visa. It results in an approved petition which is permission to apply for that visa. Also, how many times do we see in the topics "VISA APPROVED!" and read it to see it is the petition, not the visa?

The visa application fee is $240 currently. It is not a petition fee.

It is also difficult to sort out sometimes when someone does not fill out their timeline and says "I applied for my K-1 visa 6 months ago and..." when what they actually did was file an I-129f petition.

Your advice is appreciated
