If it was checked on the DS-260, you have to give it about 3 weeks. If it wasn't marked, you can go straight to the SSA and apply.

As for the insurance, they can still add him.  There was another thread on VJ taking about insurance companies being ridiculous about this but they can override it.  Also, if you filed taxes, you can use his ITIN for health insurance purposes until his social comes.

Yes, you can.  As per the SSA's instructions for the application form AND on their website, as long as you have your endorsed MRIV (machine readable visa in your passport), they can issue your social because that MRIV serves as your temporary greencard until your actual one comes and it can take a while (ours took 177 days!).  Unfortunately, the SSA seems to be one of the least trained government organizations.  I'd call and book an appointment and show them the instructions.

Erm can you explain? i don't think a canadian PR would give up their resident status just by activating their immigrant visa

Remember, when you activate that visa, you become a non-resident of Canada.  Your visa in your passport is good for a year and can be restamped if the GC takes longer (it shouldn't) and you are legally entitled to work with that activated visa.  I'd wait until you plan to actually leave Canada.

    Happy Birthday!

The context of “resident” here is in terms of taxes and entitlement for social benefits and healthcare.

Permanent Resident status is not affected by a US immigrant visa.

Hi everyone just letting you know today I received the “ issued” and passport tracking. Just in the morning it showed “issued” under AP and an hour later tracking number. A reminder that my appointment was on January 12, and medical wasn't ready until Jan 30th.

    Milda,

I’m sorry this happened to you.
    Be brave.
    Move to the US.
As per the affidavit of support HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU AND YOUR 3 CHILDREN, his or not doesn’t matter he signed. You have the right to arrive at the address you gave in your interview, arrive where he lives, really. Arrive there, he can’t kick you out. When you fly, put your family’s address for the Green cRd to arrive there. NOT at your husbands address.  Fly with your kids to where your husband lives. If he isn’t home, you wait.  But do tell your family you might need to crash there, and to give you a week to find a job, here it’s easy as hell. apply for WIC. Its a card for food. Women Infant Children. Any woman with children, pretty much any household that makes less than 70-90k qualifies for it. As soon as you arrive, if you don’t have an address, open a PO Box at the Post Office, GET an ID or a driver’s license. And get anything with your name on it, and the address that will be staying at. Phone bill, open a debit card. He might not file for divorce once you step foot in the US, if he hasn’t… YOU need to file for it. Who files first has the upper hand. And he will have to show up in court in the State that YOU DECIDE to live with your children. IF he files first, YOU will have to travel to where he lives and show up in court.  Let’s suppose he still wants to proceed with the divorce with you in the US, thats ok. You will receive alimony and child support. You have a good case, he didn’t have the best intentions by wanting
to leave you stranded wherever you are. Once you land in the US, he is f..ucked. He signed an affidavit of support, in which he is responsible for your financial stability and your children, ALL of them.
Thats why he wants to divorce before you arrive. Although its dumb because you already had your interview.

back to the IR1, you wont have to worry about it for 10 years, as your green card will be for that long. From the day you fly, 3 years later you can apply for Citizenship and they will see your situation. Pay your taxes and be a good citizen.
If you need advice,  send me a private message. Im not divorced, but my husband got fuc..ed by his ex wife by filing for divorce first. So I know.

Dude signed the affidavit of support
You and your kids own his ### for 10 years.
Sue him for all your living expenses.  He literally owes you a living.  You don't have to work or anything, he owes you a home and a lifestyle.

If he doesn't provide it you can use the government to take it from his paycheck.
    There's free attorneys for you.
He's gonna regret the day he met you. (If you play your cards right)

Form I-864, Affidavit of Support under Section 213A of the INA, is a contract an individual signs agreeing to use their financial resources to support the intending immigrant named on the affidavit. The individual who signs the affidavit of support becomes the sponsor once the intending immigrant becomes a lawful permanent resident. The sponsor is usually the petitioner who filed an immigrant petition on behalf of the intending immigrant.

Just focus on survival and getting the free ride he owes you, you will be fine.

Yes! There's another one for public inquiry : https://ca.usembassy.gov/embassy-consulates/public-inquiry-form/
I sent an email to both and got a better response on the public inquiry form. Good luck! Not sure if it's the same people or different units responding.

    I’m so happy for you!
My husband crosses the border every 3 weeks, to go to work and he has asked more questions than I can remember.  Regarding food, you can take ALL your pantry( flour, cans, oil, pasta) really. BUT NO CITRUS! Seriously, to be safe I wouldn’t carry any fruit or vegetables at all,  we picked our own cherries last summer, and I gave him a container with some for his flight, he had to surrender the poor cherries entering the US. You can even bring plants, although you are supposed to clean the soil of them and put them in water…
groceries  don’t cost much but you will be surprised how much you spend to fill up your fridge again, along with your cans and non perishable items. Think about it. For example I have a lot of spicy salsas on my fridge door,  I will be putting them in a cooler, each one could be $5-7? X 20 $100-$120…? I don’t need to spend money on that.
PS  If you like Robertson’s Mincemeat 🤣 I would consider taking a few jars, it’s not really a thing in some States. Amazon has them for $25 shipping to the US. Oh yeah and a Costco box of Coffee Crisp wont hurt me either.

In Montreal, whenever documents are submitted after the interview, realistically it will be 4-8 weeks before the visa is ready.

Im back at my hotel room having breakfast. I arrived like 8:45 and went  in exactly 9:00 or 5 minutes after. The line to go in has nothing to do with the time of your appointment, there was a guy before me with a 9:30 appointment  that went it first and a guy behind with 9:45. I waited for a long time to be called but at least I was warm 😆. To my surprise the first officer spoke Spanish so I was able to have a nice conversation in Spanish. Interestingly she said my lawyer was not registered in my case! Wtaf? (Here I am thinking my green card would be arriving at their office).
A few minutes later I was called by another officer, she told me what I already knew: Refused  221g-  Awaiting for medical exam- admin proccesing. My medical was Dec 30, so hopefully will be updated soon. I wasn’t even shocked or anything, I was expecting it. I do have to say It was funny when I turned around and some of the  people sitting there looked horrified lol, she did say refused on the mic.
    Meh
So how long is the 221g- pending’s taking?
I  do have to say there must be a security issue with backpacks, my purse was bigger  than the woman in front me and she had to go put her tiny “ backpack”  in the car. I panicked, but  I was called right away and  they didn’t tell me anything.

@Ilovecancun29 Never mind. I track back comments and found your post about your interview date and time. So, Your's is 9:00 am, it will be snowing. It's crazy freezing this day. My first time to experience -24C and my hand getting numb.

Good luck to all having their interviews tomorrow and the rest of the week.
