Maybe I did do something wrong. When I go to the website, I don't have the option to select the Jurisdiction - I am simply asked for the New Passport/Citizenship Nationality, which because it is Canadian, it automatically gives me the Toronto form.

Anyhow hopefully I get the Renunciation Certificate ASAP, so that I can try your method for the OCI!

So I had same issue. You have to create brand new account. Same email address worked, just use different password

    Hi @VIR CHAMP

Can you describe what the issue was when you applied for the renunciation? I filled out my application form, but since the passport was issued in Canada, the application form defaults to the Consulate in Canada. Was this the same issue you encountered?

    Many thanks,

    NK

Yes, that was the issue. They advised me to creat a new account using correct jurisdiction

Can you provide some clarity on Renouncing Indian Citizenship and then applying for OCI from the United States please? (i.e. with a Canadian Passport/American GC)

    Thanks!

So far I am at Renouncing. This video on youtube is very helpful.
pro tip: (why my application was rejected initially) - Make sure the embassy on the application/gov. form is New York and not Toronto.

    Hi @VIR CHAMP

    A couple of questions -

    (i) Did you get your citizenship certificate mailed out to you in the US? If yes, how long did it take and was it delivered using an overnight/express delivery? Alternatively, did you choose to receive it at an address within Canada?

(ii) Did you apply for your Canadian passport from within the US,  or did you apply from Canada? If you applied from within the US, how long did it take to get your passport?

Hope your OCI process is coming along well!

    Happy Holidays!

    NK

I asked for urgent delivery of my certificate so I received it when I was in Canada.

I applied for passport from US and received it in US within a month.

I had some hurdles (form filling issue) with renouncing my Indian citizenship but it’s renounced now and got the surrendered passport back from CGI

Thanks @Kai G. Llewellyn!! This is exactly what I did via MyUSCIS and thus thought to post on here.

I am only a little nervous because I plan to fly in and out of Canada next month to get my Canadian Passport, and don't know what to say when I present my US Green Card with the new Canadian Passport. I don't want them to raise issue asking why am I travelling on the new passport and what happened to my previous Indian Passport (on which my US Immigrant Visa is stamped - I will still have that with me, not sure if I should present it to them proactively as I approach the counter)?

Hello, How was your experience with in and out to Canada?
was there any concern at the border while entering US using new Canadian passport and green card?

Great to have another in the same boat @Maverick_TO !

I have not looked into this, but I do not see how it matters. If you are a US LPR and a Canadian Citizen, you are informing India that you are no longer an Indian Citizen and wish to apply for an OCI. That seems simple enough?

Why does it matter WHERE you apply for OCI? (Maybe I'm missing something here?) That being said, I do want to inform USCIS that I am no longer an Indian Citizen and now a Canadian Citizen - for them to update in their records, i.e. so there is not confusion when I travel In/Out from the US and when I eventually apply for a US Citizenship.

    How do you inform USCIS?

    Hi @From_CAN_2_US, @VIR CHAMP, @jpfashizzle

Seems like I'm in the same boat as well (i.e., Indian Citizen, Canadian PR/awaiting Canadian Citizenship Oath, Immigrated to the US as a LPR). Once Canadian citizenship has been granted, have you looked into the feasibility of -

    (i) Renouncing Indian Citizenship from the US assuming you are now living in the US as LPRs

(ii) Applying for the OCI booklet from the US

In a recent chat I had with someone that works at the CGI-NY outpost, I was given mixed information that the two tasks I listed above will need to be done in Canada and not from the US. Can anyone that may have looked into this detail chime in?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    NK

So I had the same questions and I reached out to VFS (New York).

They confirmed, as long as I have a valid status in US, I can apply for it from US. You have to provide some sort of residency proof under your name (driver’s license/hydro bill/internet bill etc.)

I have sent my application early this week, hoping to have more info. next week.

Agreed with @Kai G. Llewellyn, but just adding -

I don’t maintain a Canadian address anymore and when I let IRCC know I am moving to the US, I gave them my US address for any communication they may want to send. IRCC is able to send communication to both Canadian or US addresses, so they are ok with you not maintaining a Canadian address. I confirmed this by calling IRCC.

Did you also ask them specifically about Citizenship certificate to be send in USA?
    Did they confirm it?

Even if you have to leave USA, you can do that using your home country passport.

You don’t really need the Canadian passport except to enter canada by air. Even then your home country passport and your green card should be enough as US LPRs are allowed to enter canada visa free just like Americans. Note - I haven’t tried this but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

When travelling by land, just your home country passport should do I believe since CBSA has records of your citizenship. Maybe they would ask for Canadian ID (if you still have one), and if all else fails, your green card should get you through.

Make sense. Well my home country has restrictions on the travel after gaining other country citizenship. I have grace period of 30 days, after that I have to pay penalty each time I cross the border. (may be at the time of surrender)

@VIR CHAMP refer to following link. They will send your citizenship certificate to US, but like @Kai G. Llewellyn said, it would probably take a whole lot longer.

When the time comes, I intend to get it mailed to the US, as I am in no hurry to obtain a Canadian passport.

I must be overthinking, but I applied with Paper Application and not Online. The link talks about Online application.  Would that make difference on shipping certificate to US?

That is what I am planning to. No rush, not going out of USA anytime soon after oath.

I was under the impression that IRCC would only mail to addresses in Canada. That might not be the case. Regardless, it is faster to have it delivered to a Canadian address. It seems that it takes 2.5 weeks for it to show up after the Ceremony. You can certainly ask IRCC if they would mail the certificate to a US address.

I didn't stay in Canada waiting for it to arrive, but I had a second home in Canada which I had the certificate sent to. I was able to re-enter Canada using my GC and NEXUS card without issue.

I have still yet to apply for a Canadian passport as I'm waiting for the mess at the passport offices to clear up. I don't have the time to queue outside Service Canada for hours. xD

    I found this

Agree that it would be much much faster if get it shipped in Canada but I don’t have Nexus. So not sure if I would be able to go to Canada using GC without Citizenship Certificate.

Yes, I am going to Canadian side of Niagara falls to complete the oath ceremony.

I advised them that my principal residence was in the US and provided that address, but I also maintain a secondary address in Canada and asked them to send my certificate to my Canadian address.

LPR's are allowed to have secondary foreign residences, they just must make their primary home in the US. Trust me, there are plenty of wealthy LPR's in the US who have homes all over the planet.

Did you stay in Canada until the certificate arrived or have it delivered at close family/friend address?

I am in the same boat. Living in USA on Green card status since May 2021. I have my Canadian Citizenship oath coming up next week.

I have updated IRCC about my address in USA and Green Card status.

My oath is online so I was wondering to drive to Niagara falls,ON,  complete the ceremony and come back to USA.

    1. Would I be able to receive my Citizenship Certificate on USA address and using that apply for a Passport?

@Kai G. Llewellyn why did you recommend having Canadian Citizenship Certificate to be delivered in Canada?

    2.  Do we have to inform USCIS?

If yes, do we do at the border or we wait for certificate?

If yes, would that change anything with out Green card or any issue at the time of US citizenship application?

I will be in the same situation, so have the same question...

I am guessing if you did not renounce your earlier citizenship, it is less important, but if it is a CHANGE (renouncing of old citizenship and taking up of Canadian), I think USCIS would need to know. Not sure though...

Did you receive an CR1? In that case, perhaps the time when you apply for removal of conditions would be a good opportunity to inform them of change of citizenship.

Please let me know should you find out the answer...

I have already got my IR1 so I wont have to remove any conditions. I will keep reading and see if USCIS actually has a requirement to update the Citizenship

Nope, you won't get anything related to your SSN at POE. The only way I know of to get a receipt is to apply in person, but you can't do that if you've asked for it to be automatically sent to you until it's been 3 weeks with no SSN.

Got it! Thanks for all the help.

Please excuse my knowledge on this but the rules are changing often so wanted to confirm, if we required to present COVID-19 test result at POE?

Certain banks allow you to open up an account with just a proof of US address, no SSN needed. I have an account with Chase that I've had for years now. :) They'll be able to add your SSN to your banking info when you get it.

    Awesome! Good to know.

Does POE atleast give us something that we have applied for SSN or no?

Shouldn't have any problems with recalls or selling the car in USA. Once you have received the importation docs from CBP you tender them to your respective secretary of state to register the car in that State. That is it.

I don't know of any safety certificate issued by a State. Normally you call your insurer and provide the VIN, insurer asks a few basic questions then issue a policy.

Thank you! I was just not 100% sure going for after-market items so wondering if anyone had any trouble down the road. We know that insurance company would simply require a reason not to pass your claim...

  19. I see many people got after-market TPMS and successfully imported the car to USA.
Has any one had any trouble later on for follow-up on any recall, or selling the car in USA ?
In Ontario if you are selling the car, you would have to present the safety certificate. Does individual state has specific requirements ? and did any one had any issue with it ?
Also, how did your insurer reacted it? Technically your car is not meeting the FMVSS, so are you still covered ?

    Hey All,

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and giving advices. Wouldn't have made this far without you all.

I am facing a potential issue which is giving me a lot of anxiety. My interview is coming soon (7th April) and I have all the docs except an updated PCC from India. I have one that expired in January.

The thing is, I don't live there anymore and I read somewhere that I don't need an updated one if I am not living there at the time of the interview. I did visit India for a couple of weeks last year.

I have applied for a new PCC but the consulate is taking its sweet time giving one out.

I am worried that they might not accept the expired PCC. Does anyone have experience with such issue?

    Thank you for your support!

Police certificates expire after one year, unless the certificate was issued from your country of previous residence (India in this case) and you have not returned there since the police certificate was issued.
