    Generally true. Few points:

    * extension letter accompanied by GC

** GC grants visa free access to certain countries despite nationality. Example: Canada, Mexico

Apprently as of 2022 you don’t need the eTA to transit Canada by air as a green card holder anymore. Useful information I just learned (we had applied for my husband back in the era of Covid).

Thank you for the response. Air Canada and Lufthansa did not allow me since my home country passport requires transit visa and they needed GC card with future expiry date to board. Have to use different airlines and hopefully will be able to travel back to US without issues with the same airlines.

Yes, you always need to be mindful of the visas required for your passport at any country you will be traveling to or transiting though. The extension letter grants you the right to come home to the U.S., but not entry into any other country (or their airports).

Interesting, could you please elaborate? Did this work for online check in? I was always worried putting expiration date as +4 years.

Did your husband have to show GC and extension letter to airline staff? Were they OK with discrepancy between expiration date on GC and what was entered online for expiration date?

Usually you can’t do online check in for international flights, but there is some sort of thing in the online portals for the airlines where you have to provide your identity information at least 48 hours before any flights to the U.S.? That’s when we used the extended green card date. I think I learned to do it that way because his green card was already expired, and they wouldn’t allow me to put and expired date. I was forced to use the “new” expiration date. I wouldn’t hesitate to put it in the online check in either, personally. But to each their own of course :)

Hubby doesn’t remember them ever asking to see the letter, but they may have at the check in desk. Those travel days are always a blur!

    Hi everyone

Has anyone travelled international with expired GC and i751 extension letter? Which airlines will not accept this,, any idea?

My husband has traveled on it and will again this Christmas. It’s no big deal, other than the hassle of carrying the extra document. When you put your green card expiration date into any online flight stuff, just use your green card expiration date +4 years (assuming you have the 48 month extension letter). There are no airlines that don’t accept it. You’re still a LPR!

    Hi Guys,

On your immigration timeline. For your NOA date did you put down the receipt date on the NOA extension letter or the notice date?

For me personally I put the notice date of when we got the text message update that it was received, although our actual notice date on the form is one day earlier. Nothing too scientific here! 😛

Hi LIN filers, anyone here received 48month

extension letter? I almost checked all the posts and I only saw national, Potomac, Texas and other centers sending out letters. Are we forgotten by LIN?

December 2021 LIN filer here, we got our 48 month extension letter last month. Don’t worry, they’re coming!

After 12 months of ZERO updates, we finally got something today!  (Thank you USPS Informed Delivery.)  As soon as I saw there was a letter arriving, I logged into myUSCIS to check for the update.  But...  There wasn't an update, just the same old ones.

Anyway, the mail finally came, and we rushed to open the letter.  No update really.  It was another NOA that my husband's green card has been extended for an additional 24 months.  (48 months total now)  That's it.  I guess that's better than an RFE, so we'll take it.

My husband just said he'd consider citizenship, so we maybe doing that in the next year or so.  It's not a priority for us.

Same here; my husband said he may consider citizenship in the next few years, but for now we're super stoked to have the longer extension letter and stop worrying about the impending expiration of the previous one! :)

Hey guys, just a question i am also a december 2021 filer, but I am planning on traveling to germany for christmas this year or maybe even before that. What are the steps for me? Like I know you can get a visa stamp in your password? But how do I do that, because I haven't seen anything where I could make an appointment in Norfolk with our Local office.

I only have the extension letter, my greencard is expired.

And since I am already typing, is there a reason a lot of you guys decided to do the N400? Because I was kinda hoping I can just refile my greencard stuff every 10 years, because I dont want to become a US Citizen. I know that might sound weird for some of you, but its not super easy to have dual citizenship and I would never want to give up my german citizenship.

As stated by another commenter, no worries, just take that extension letter and your green card with you whenever you travel overseas. When airlines ask for your green card expiration date, it’s simply your previous expiration date +2 years. I made my husband keep his extension letter in a plastic baggy to protect it while we were traveling in Europe this summer 🤣

And yeah citizenship is a personal thing, of course if your home country allows dual citizenships or you simply don’t care too much about your passport of birth, you should certainly go for it! My husband’s country is still trying to add dual citizenship to the constitution, but I’m hopeful they’ll allow it before the next green card renewal comes around 😅 Cheers, safe travels!

  9. Hey, January filers! We are December, but our forum is not nearly as active as yours. My husband is doing RoC from CR-1, we submitted our packet at the beginning of December and very quickly received his 24 mo extension letter, but was never given a biometrics appointment. I've checked the online portals and nothing has updated, and of course I have informed delivery on my mail and haven't seen anything coming from USCIS. Our service center is LIN (Nebraska), is anyone else a CR-1 who has been sent there?

We were sent there for our initial I-130 way back when too, they must just really like us... The slowest service center, I swear!

    Hi ,

I see in USPS informed delivery that I have a letter from USCIS, I already received my 24 month notice and biometrics reused letter. Not sure what is this letter for, no change in online status, super super worried. Has anyone faced this kind of situation. Thanks

I filed in Dec 2021, reviewed 24 month notice in Dec mid and biometrics in Dec end 2021

I'm not sure what it could be, but I don't see any reason it would be bad news! Take a deep breath and wait for the letter to arrive, then come back here and update us with what it was. :) I have often stressed myself out with looking at something coming via informed delivery and it be no big deal in the end.

So I had a typographical correction request sent last month regarding the spelling mistake in last name. . Today got an email from Nebraska service centre that they have forwarded it to the adjudicating officer as only the officer reviewing the case can make the correction. What should I do next as I do have travel plans this summer ? As my travel is only in summer should I wait till I hve the proof of travel ?

I would schedule an appointment to get the i551 stamp in your passport to extend your green card validity, and not chance it on the misspelled extension letter. Call USCIS at 1-800-375-5283 and request an appointment for the I-551 stamp in your passport. The call center can schedule for an appointment at an office near you

Hi guys, hope you all had a great valentine's day!

Just finally read through everything from where I left,

and I started to get worried 😅

My package was received on 12/3/2021 and NOA was 12/8/2021,

and that was it... my receipt # is WAC.

    Haven't heard anything since then,

should I give USCIS a call to see if I missed my biometrics notice?

Is anyone still waiting for the biometrics notice like me?

Our package is about the same dates as yours, only we are at LIN (Nebraska Service Center). My husband is doing RoC from a Cr-1, so he’s never had biometrics taken stateside. But we also haven’t received anything beyond the NOA, so I wouldn’t worry. :)
