I filed for my mom on my own. In fact, I filed everything immigration related on my own, and I've been on quite few visas: J1, F1, OPT, H1B, then filed I-485 and later N400 all on my own. I do not trust lawyers, especially immigration lawyers. There is only one immigration lawyer I trust. In fact, the only thing someone else filed for me was the I-140 (oh and the I-129 for H1B) filed by my company's lawyer, because it's an employer's petition. It is very straight forward. You only need to read the instructions, and follow the instruction. Do some research online about the process, how long it takes, what are some of the pitfalls to avoid, and you will be fine. If you have any specific questions along the way, come back and post in this website. 

The processes you've already done are more complicated than an I-130 for a parent. Simple biological relationships are not complicated cases unless there are unusual circumstances and/or inadmissibilities invovled.

It is recommended in the same sense of throwing a stack of money on a fireplace to keep warm.
That is, technically you could do it but it is not needed. And there are definitely cheaper ways to do it.

No there's no requesting what service center it goes to.  They balance the workload and send them where they need to.

likewise, my [afternoon] ceremony went smoothly. there were no street parking so I ended up going to the ACE parking garage nearby that charges $2 per 15 minutes and ended up spending $20. I need to figure out how to invest in parking garages near the paramount theater. it was my first time in the paramount theater and it's a beautiful space. I was struck by how low the security was which makes sense since the whole thing was really a celebration with live music and welcomes and congratulations. I guess for me anything with USCIS has always felt so strict with metal detectors and checking of IDs and forms that I wasn't used to this. my spouse, daughter, mother in law, and brother in law had to sit upstairs in the balcony and unfortunately I was in the back downstairs so they couldn't see me the entire time and I couldn't change seats since they give out the certificates based on your row number. the usher was super nice though and let my daughter sit with me so it didn't feel like a complete waste that my family came along. I too did not submit my passport application afterwards -- the line was huge so I was happy I had decided against it.
 
someone shared a story to me about a friend of his that was at a different oath ceremony. apparently he had a ticket for staying late at lake Anza. on one of the questions (on the back of the oath ceremony notice) about if you've had a ticket since your interview he answered [truthfully] yes but they couldn't find it on their database since it's a local park that issued the ticket. apparently it delayed his naturalization a whole year. I have no way of verifying the story but I don't know why they would make it up. I guess they take the final questionnaire on the back of the notice seriously!

So the ceremony came and went, and I'm now a US citizen! I didn't stick around to submit a passport app afterward, though, so I'm going to have to drop by the post office sometime.

For what's it worth mine still says "Estimated wait time: We are taking longer than expected to process your case. You do not need to do anything at this time" and I've been approved for oath so I wouldn't put too much weight on the estimated wait time. I also posted it here and many others have had the same experience

I had my interview today and it went well. Here's what happened
I parked at the portsmouth square garage, there was no line and I went in I had to go through security and the metal detector like at the airport. The metal detector went off even though I had nothing metallic, they had me walk in again, and it beeped again. They tested it with another guy working there and they finally gave the machine two big whacks after which it didn't beep again when I walked in I took the elevator to the second floor and waited in the waiting room. My interview started about 15 minutes late. Apparently everyone's computers were being slow and slowing the the interviews. Next I was asked to take an oath to be truthful We went through my application, did the civics test, and the language reading and writing test. For one of the questions "What is the rule of law" I listed the four bullet points and she said one was enough and there wasn't enough space on her computer to record the whole thing anyway. I guess they type your answers and are not just marking them as correct or incorrect. The whole thing probably took 30 minutes although it would probably have gone faster if the computers were not acting up or crashing The interviewer wondered why I applied under marriage versus five years since I've had a green card for longer than 5 years. I said I have documents for both so either was fine at which point suggested we change to five years since there would be less documents to be reviewed and I said that was fine I was then told that I passed and was given a sheet that said that said I was recommended for approval A few hours later I literally got 12 sms notifications from uscis. When I log in it now says the following on egov "Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled. We placed you in line for your oath ceremony and will send you a notice for Receipt Number IOExxxxxxxxx, with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony. You should receive your notice within 30 days of its mailing date. Please follow the instructions in the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address" and on uscis.gov it says "February 25, 2019. We approved your application. Your final step to becoming a citizen is to attend your naturalization ceremony. We will mail you a letter when we schedule your naturalization ceremony. Estimated wait time: We are taking longer than expected to process your case. You do not need to do anything at this time"  

Had my interview appointment today at 630 Sansome with a very nice (surprisingly so!) officer.
I'm used to entering the building on the Washington St side, but this time, I found it locked; when I pulled on the door, a guard opened it and told me I needed to go in on the Sansome side instead.
Went to the 2nd floor, checked in, clerk told me to go to the 3rd floor. I think I had been sitting there no more than 5 minutes when my name was called. (So this would have been about 15 to 20 minutes early!)
 
The officer had me read out a sentence ("Name the state with the most people") and then write out its answer ("California is the state with the most people").
He then asked me these 6 questions:
- What is one promise you make when you become a United States citizen?
- Who is the governor of your state now?
- Where is the Statue of Liberty?
- Name two national U.S. holidays.
- What movement tried to end racial discrimination?
- Who was the first president?
 
We then went through the rest of my app and he checked out my travel history (Canada didn't put stamps into my passport most of the time, heh, and I made some trips last year after applying), work history (I changed jobs last year), and then ran me through all the "no" questions (e.g. "are you a terrorist").
I'd brought a ton of documentation to justify not doing Selective Service (I didn't get my permanent residency until after the age of 26) and also to justify my wife's citizenship, but he basically took my verbal statements as testimony and left it at that. (He had me take an oath of truthfulness in the beginning.)
At the end, he had me sign a couple of things including the amendments to the application, then printed out a piece of paper that said I've been recommended for approval! He also said I should see a letter in 3-6 weeks saying what oath ceremony to go to.
 
So now the wait for that last piece of paper!

Got my interview letter!! Can't wait for it to be over

ALL Seattle filers from November and December of 2017 have seen this, and probably many more filers from other offices. What it means is those estimated times and countdowns on the USCIS website are garbage of very limited practical use.

Estimated case completion time is still "February 2019 (1 month)". There's no estimated wait time now; it says "We scheduled your interview" with no date.
 
Status on egov is: "On December 21, 2018, we scheduled an interview for your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, Receipt Number IOExxx. We will mail you an interview notice. Please follow any instructions in the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address."
