  1. My wife's green card was approved 3 weeks ago, and her EAD/combo card was approved the day after. She had checked the box to have an SSN issued on the EAD application, the combo card arrived a week after the approval (although it's useless as she now has her green card). However, she has not yet received an SSN and she needs it ASAP. Is there any way to check if one has been issued? Or how long should we wait before applying for one?

  2. My wife had her interview today, Buffalo NY field office. Went really well, took about 30 minutes. He basically went through the AOS application just asked her the questions from it. I think he asked me one question, what I work. He didn’t ask for any medical exam info. We didn’t have much in the way of supporting documents, my wife wasn’t able to get her SSN before her I94 expired so we don’t have joint financials. But he didn’t even ask to see them, at the end of the interview he just said if I have any documents I would like to submit he would take them. I had the purchase contract for a house we just bought in both our names, and vehicle insurance card with both our names, that’s all. We have a 3 month old baby we took along, she started getting fussy towards the end but he didn’t mind at all, in fact he was really friendly. He told us he will approve the case, and less than 30 mins after we left the office the status updates to “New card is being produced”. He had told us we’d get a notice of approval letter in 2 weeks, and the GC 2 weeks after that. Think we’ll get the GC sooner? Also, while we were in the office he checked on the status of my wife’s EAD and said it had not been touched yet. However, this afternoon (about 3 hours after the interview) the status of that also changed to “New card is being produced”. He said if we end up getting both to shred the combo card.

Oh, December 21 was her NOA date.

This happened to me when I came in October 2016.

It IS a pain in the ### to deal with, but it needs to be done as soon as possible to avoid further issues when it comes to AoS.

For me, the port of Entry misspelled my last name.  I was SO excited I didn’t bother double check.

If it’s a mismatch, are you close to the PoE to have it corrected?

Once it is, you have to go back to apply for a SSN.  Then once again to change her name if shes doing that.  I had issues every step of the way.

How did you find out? The information is correct on the I94. And yes, we're not too far from the POE.

That won’t help. The address on the forms while applying for a k1 won’t impact the ssn. The info mismatched must be a document, name, something else

Ok, thanks. On the application form, for the type of SSN being applied for, she ticked "Legal Alien not allowed to work", and from my research here it looks like we should have checked "Legal alien allowed to work". (although you still have to wait for the EAD to actually work). Is that correct?

Issue with her SAVE database imo.  Often it combines first and middle names.

She doesn't have a middle name. But it sounds like trying to verify that info will be a pain. We're thinking maybe trying to reapply for an SSN with the address she gave at the interview (I still get mail there) and see if it works.

Call USCIS and tell them the problem.

Then verify I-94 and Passport with them.

Make sure her address she is providing matches USCIS address??

After that, I'm at a lose and would ask USCIS to fax you a copy showing their records of that data so you can take it to SSA Office.

I just remembered, from your post, that we used a different address (same ZIP) on the SSN application than the one she gave as her future US address at her K1 interview (we're renting). That might be the problem?

  7. My fiancee applied for her SSN 3 weeks after entering the US, and after several weeks was contacted by the SSA, who said they were unable to issue the SSN because the information provided them does not match up with records from "immigration". We gave them all the same info as was used in the K1 visa application, birth certificate, I-94 etc. The Administration did not say what information did not match, they told us we need to contact "immigration" to resolve the differences. I have no idea who to contact or where to begin with this. Any ideas?

  8. My fiance was approved at her interview (K visa) in Montreal today. She only had a regular (no fingerprint check) police certificate from the local police. They didn't say anything about needing anything else. She also only had her Ontario short form birth certificate (wallet size) and they didn't say anything about that either. (She'd ordered a long form months ago, but it was delayed and didn't arrive in time for the interview). I'm not recommending not having all the required documentation, but at least those of you that have interviews coming up before there's time to get the proper certificate probably don't have anything to worry about.

    IT HAPPENED!!!! 205 days

    Checked the new website... Approved!!!

No email. No text. No update on "old" website.

I contacted my senator... a few days ago, maybe it helped!!!

We were the same NOA1 date, and same approval date. I didn't ever contact USCIS or representatives so who knows if it's actually helping or just coincidence that people are getting approved after contacting.

  10. Thanks for the answers and clarifications so far.
So the CR1 results in a green card within a few weeks of being in the US, but we still would have to get married first, and then won't be able to live together until the visa is processed, which takes approx 13 months, according to the comparison. So that's a con for going that route. With the K1 then AOS, it would be more expensive, but at least we'd be able to be together in the US while awaiting the green card. Am I right? Oh, and she won't be working, so being able to work is not an issue.

  11. I am a US citizen engaged to a Canadian. We got engaged and were planning to just get married right away (we were already planning to get married in 3 weeks), but then I started looking at residency options (I know, should have done that long ago) and am not sure what direction to take. Originally the plan was to get married in Ontario and file for a CR1 visa for her, and I would move to Ontario and commute to work in NY every day (we both live close to our respective borders) until we got her green card, then move to NY. But I found out that I can't exactly do that legally, even though you're allowed to visit Canada for up to 6 months at a time as a visitor, you're not supposed to be living there as a visitor, and I would run the risk of getting denied entry. If I was just moving up there temporarily without the need to come back across the border I'd get away with it. Apparently the border officials get suspicious if a US citizen is going back and forth every day without having Canadian residency, even though I'm not working there. And we don't want to get married and then have to live apart. And I understand it's not legal for her to come here as a tourist and get married, even though it sounds like some people get away with this. So now we need to decide if we should give up the idea of getting married next month and instead apply for a K1 visa and get married here when we get that and follow the process of filing for an adjustment of status and CR1 visa after that. I guess I'm wondering, are these really our only options? And if we get a K1 visa and she moves here to get married, how soon would she be able to travel internationally? She has a lot of family on the Canadian side of the border, and it will be hard for her not being able to go visit, since it's so close yet out of reach.
