ok I did more research on my own and established that lots of people just go for the day to the interview, so I'm fine  Booked the flights! FYI WestJet is having a sale and I'm getting from Vancouver Island to Montreal and back for under $350!

mumbles1416 reacted to NikLR in Can a US non-resident Citizen sponsor his spouse? NEED HELP!
You can start the process from Canada, however, the US consulate in Montreal, where all immigrant visa interviews take place, is very strict on domicile.  Eventually, you will need to move back to the USA.  Also if your job will not continue after you move, you will either need US income, 3x the asset value, or a joint sponsor for the I-864.  However all of that is about 3-6 months away, so you can start the process now and work on getting domiciled in the USA during that time.  Because you are filing from Canada initially, it's possible that your USCIS portion of the process can be faster but I would bet on it being about 6 months.

We have a huge thread in the Canada regional forum about US domicile and the issues people have at the consulate if they aren't.
