US Immigration from Canada

Part 2 thread started, dedicated to all families affected by Montreal's egregious delays.

I am a green card holder and moved to a new home within the US in May. Within days of moving I submitted the AR-11 online and received an email that the request to update the address was accepted. My husband mailed his I-865 and got a confirmation letter by mail that it was accepted. I was bothered that I never received a final confirmation that my address was updated, so today I phoned USCIS and found out that indeed, they had my old address on file and no apparent record of my new address. The agent on the line couldn't give me any answers about why it wasn't updated. I am going to try mailing the AR-11 now, but I'm extremely anxious about this given that it has now been 2 months since my move. Is this going to cause me problems when I apply for citizenship? I did everything right but for some reason my online AR-11 didn't stick. Any tips or comfort would be extremely welcome. I'm an anxious person and this type of thing freaks me out.

I'm way ahead for ROC at the moment, I'm not due until October or so next year but I'd like to get ahead. I've already begun collecting some documents but at this moment would like some samples of what people have sent for their ROC as samples of showing co-mingling in their lives. This is what I have/will have collected for the package so far.

-Joint bank accounts

-Joint tax filing

-Joint car insurance

- Health insurance (not sure how to show this, but we're military so my coverage is under his name as sponsor)

- Photos showing time spent together with family/together

- Flight tickets together (Haven't flown a lot but at least 1 so far)

- Joint bills with our names on them (water, electric, gas)

- Possibly join credit cards (I am listed as the 2ndary user of ones he owns- don't have one of my own as of yet)

I've seen people mentioned affidavits may be included but is it required? I feel as though the proof above seems sufficient but if we were to need affidavits who would be best to obtain them from? Family members, friends, coworkers?

Is there anything else anyone would recommend to add to the list?

Not sure if applicable but I'm currently not working, so no paystubs or anything of my own. When/if I do find a job, would any kind of employment proof be necessary? I know it is more of a focus to show that the marriage is continuous and maintained and co-mingling, so I wasn't sure if my employment status mattered here.

No children, we do have a pet though - and both our names are on the adoption paperwork.

I remember by IO telling me it may/may not be waived.

Hello, I am a Canadian will be relocating to the US shortly and will become a US tax resident. At the same time, I will also elect to become a non-resident of Canada for tax purposes.

I was originally planning to sell all my investments before I relocate, and pay the necessary capital gains tax to Canada and be done with it. Unfortunately, my investment portfolio is down approximately 20%.

Is there is a optimal way to harvest capital losses to offset future capital gains in a tax effective manner in my situation? If I sold my investments while I am still a resident of Canada, will I be able to claim these capital losses (which occurred in Canada) against future capital gains (which will occur in US)?

Would appreciate some guidance.

A college graduate and former civil servant, Mr. Chin had to learn his city anew, and now he could still hardly believe it as a homeless person.

On that evening in 2012 in the Barbara Kleiman Residence in East Williamsburg, he saw only one other Chinese person in the room. The man was skinny, his ill-fitting clothes hanging loosely on his frame. Mr. Chin sized him up with an expert eye: an immigrant, most likely from Fujian Province; no family, no English, no documents.

I m at the bottom, Mr. Chin remembers thinking. But I m better off than him.

The other man was named Mo Lin. Mr. Chin sensed that if they had met just a few years earlier, they would have had very little in common. At the beginning, I can t say I liked him, he said. But we are the two Chinese people in the shelter, so we talk.

Mr. Chin possessed little more than his closely guarded secrets, including a criminal record that haunted him. They ran through his mind on a loop, but he divulged them to no one, certainly not this new acquaintance, and instead shared his story in broad strokes he was born in Hong Kong and had grown up in New York and was new to being homeless.

Mr. Lin was hesitant and didn t say much. It would be a while before he described his years scraping by in New York. He was indeed undocumented, and although he had worked in innumerable Chinatown kitchens, his poor health had long ago made steady work impossible, and he looked far older than his 46 years. He spent his days shuffling along the streets of Manhattan s Chinatown, smoking cigarettes on the sidewalk, watching staticky TV in threadbare Fujianese community centers.

But the men soon began spending so much time together always chatting in the shelter, strolling downtown streets, sharing plates of noodles that acquaintances assumed they were family.
