But the war that I am referring to involved the country of your current citizenship.... Or are you missing a very important piece of information?

No, I don't think so. But the UK won't ask me questions about it when I reapply for my passport.

OK, never thought that they would ... but I only thought it would have been covered in school, as this war would appear to have be an important piece of British history... but alas I was wrong....

YMMV

Besides, Pat is a Papist irish mic bastid himself.

Disclosure: I learnt nothing about the Civil War at my UK school.

Nothing at all about the civil war that occured around 1776? :)

At my school? No. We were taught English history from Henry VII to Charles I, and European history.

No history of colonialism at all?

I would have to wonder, too, if the subject was not broached.

Because from the perspective of the British Empire, it wasn't that big of a deal. It wasn't a civil war; the head of state was never at stake. Same with the war of 1812. For us, it's a big deal. For everyone else, it's one more front in the friggin' Napoleonic wars.

For us, it is. For them, it's a small kerfluffle where France engaged in some state-sponsored terrorism to help some colonies that were too far away to effectively govern revolt. Colonies were also expensive; one reason the U.S. got so big is that we bought France's and Spain's territories a scant few years later. England also has a lot more history than the U.S. We resumed trade with England after the war faded from people's memories and have been reasonably good friends since then. In the grand scheme of things, it didn't stop their empire building and it didn't really dent their presence on the world stage.

So I wouldn't read anything into it like 'oh, this is England's great national shame.'

They had many colonies. America was just one. Not even one of the more profitable ones.

I had one year of pre-GCSE history at my (rather poor) local comprehensive high-school (I had the choice of that or Geography, which I'd been doing for 2 years by then anyway). I have read many books since then however.... ;)

Also - the UK high-school curriculum doesn't (or at least it didn't) cover the US Revolutionary war either - but as far as learning that, its probably a fair bet that US high schools don't teach much about the Reformation or the English Civil War. In short, they only teach you what they think you should know. A high-school education is only a bare-minimum standard after all.

I lose track of the number of times people have asked me what the deal is with the fifth of November.

My old school

The key themes that students study are:

Health and Disease

Town and Country

Crime and Punishment

Power and Conflict

Rights and Freedom

GCSE History:

Britain and the First World War 1914-1918

Conflict and the Modern World 1919-1963

Germany 1919-1939 (in-depth study)

Russia 1919-1941 (in depth study)

Assignment 1: Britain and the Second World War: Evacuation

Assignment 2: The Second World War: The Causes and Consequences of the Battle of Stalingrad

My old college

You may choose between three courses, two of which give you the opportunity to study modern 20th century history: Nazi Germany with the Russian Revolution and Fascist Italy; or American Civil Rights, America in the 1920s and 1930s and the Cold War. Alternatively, you may prefer an early modern 16th century English and European course which will include Henry VII, Henry VIII and Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation in Germany.

Still not covering this 1776 thing, I see. My parents should ask for their taxes back.

In my high school, we learned about both of those, along with learning about the Holy Roman Empire, Russia, the English Civil War, the Spanish Armada's getting its ### kicked (there may have been something else about Spain, but mostly ### getting kicked.) It was pretty cosmopolitan, actually, because we had to learn about something up until our country got around to getting founded.

We studied the Reformation.

BTW.......this history lesson all started cause someone mentioned dividing the US and I suggested if someone says something like that then we did not learn from the Civil War. I don't really care where this history lesson was taught or not. Before someone says something like this, they need to read up on this exact event occuring in history.

It's not a bash on what country taught what.....of course a lot of that is country specific.

Yet, in the whole scheme of things, they lost a pretty big chunck of land there.
