Ok, I haven't done an extensive search to verify this because I'm at work, and I hoped one of you could answer this immediately. My fiance found a site (https://www.immigration-bureau.org/fiance_visa.htm) that states "Strict qualification apply to the K-1 Fiancé Visa. Both parties must be single, over the legal age, and have an intend to get married. The couple must be together for over two years. " Is this accurate??? I'm not even sure the site is government, since it ends in .org. I only have a few minutes here. No one has asked us yet, but we've been a couple for a year and a half, or so.

No, you don't have to have known each other for two years, you simply need to have met in person in the last two years. That is what it means.

Jamber,

The boldened statement is not correct. (Which brings into question other information that may be presented on that web site?)

Thanks for the quick response! I know we must have met in person, but this clearly says must be together for over two years. I'm not saying the information is right, I hope someone says otherwise, but I'm sure it's not referring to meeting.

You just have to have met in person within the past two years. The only other thing is that the consular officer will undoubtedly ask about your relationship to be sure it is for "real" and on-going....so make sure you develop "proofs" of relationship such as correspondence, phone records, engagement ring receipts (if you have one), etc.

That site is absolutely wrong. I checked it out from the link you posted, and you haven't misquoted it, but it's wrong. If it made such a blunder on that point, I'd be very skeptical of any other interpretations they might have of the rules for the process.

The only two year requirement in the K-1 process is that the couple must have been together in person at some time during the two years before they file the petition. They have to submit evidence to show that the time of their most recent in-person meeting was less than two years ago.

There is no minimum length of the relationship, certainly not two years. If the relationship is excessively short, there may be some doubts as to the bona fide nature of the relationship, but I don't know of any explicit guideline on the number of days that would constitute "excessively short". Certainly there are couples here who received their K-1 visa having filed the petition less than two years after their first meeting.

Yep, I too checked it out. Flat out wrong concerning the two year requirement.

The site seems to want to masquerade as an "official" goverment site; at least that's my impression of it.

The site goes on to describe what you get for $62.95.....

K-1 Visa Overview

Complicated Immigration Terms

Visa eligibility and requirements

Limitations and privileges

Easy guideline to fill out application

Preparation Checklist

2 sets of all official INS application forms

List of INS offices nationwide

List of United States embassies and consulates

All of this "stuff" you can get here and elswhere on the net for free........ :D

Thank you, everyone. If I had the time this afternoon, I would have eventually come to the same conclusion about that site, but I just didn't and my fiance was making me panic. It's so nice to know that there's a group of people going through what we are that can answer questions like these, when I just can't find the answer myself. This site is invaluable.

haha! Go look at that page now.. they fixed *that* error, but left a few others! (children can get a K-1 visa???)

This is what ticks me off so much about the lawyers that bash layperson sites like VJ or other message boards. At least if someone here gives bad info, someone else will generally correct it on the same day.

And yet a site like that can charge people money for incorrect info. Amazing.

What a scam. The site looks like a genuine US Government site with the flag and the .ORG address and so on - but as soon as you start reading, and see the spelling errors....not to mention the factual errors, you should RUN away.

Strict qualification apply to the K-1 Fiancé Visa. Both parties must be single, over the legal age, and have an intend to get married. The applicant must have met the fiancé(e) in person within the last two years, unless the applicant's religion opposes or there is a medical condition. Any children under the age of 21 may also qualify for K-1 visa as accompany relatives. They, too, will be able to apply for green cards afterwards.
