There are a lot of us on here who are fed up with waiting on the immigration authorities to process our cases. I'm betting that a lot of immigration officers don't know what it's like for us. Here's my plan: if you want to become an IO you have to spend a minimum of 6 months away from the person you love the most... and rely on other people to let you know when you'll next be together. I reckon such an experience might help them understand what we're going through!! I wonder how quickly our cases would be dealt with then....?

We have friends that work at the State Dept here in DC, mostly dealing with refugee claims. two of them work 6 days a week, normally 10 hour days with no overtime pay! Everyone has this perception that these govt workers are slackers, but from what i have seen, it's not the case. The biggest problem is that they are short staffed.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

And, I hate to say it, there are cases where people are not what they seem. I feel for the persons who are jerked around by at best immature people and at worst, liars. Yes, 6 months is a while. But, I dated my ex for 1 1/5 years and another 6 months engagement I feel a little qualified to say that you can live through two years apart. We lived 150 miles apart and I saw her every other weekend. And celibacy was the word. :) I am now at our one year anniversary with my fiance. do I wish she were here? Yes! But, I know it takes time and if we can't handle this, I will worry about us. I will be making my second trip to see her in about three weeks. Tashkent here I come!

Are there excessive processing times? yes but I see a lot of comments about incorrect amounts on checks, forgot to put everything in the package, etc. And guess what? That slows it down for everyone. All systems are based on things being right. When things go wrong, they have to patch the system and that slows it down.

Just trying to inject a bit of levity into the situation.

I've been with my SO since May 2005 and we live 5,000 miles and seven timezones apart. We haven't seen each other since the beginning of April, and while we know we'll get through this time (and we're continuing to learn about each other and fall more deeply in love even while apart) it is also very hard, as it is for ANYONE in a similar position.

I'm also aware of carelessness on the part of applicants when filing, as well as gross understaffing at USCIS. But like I said, I was trying to be a little light-hearted... having a sense of humour really helps :)

I am willing to bet that part of their training is to be aware of what the parties experience going through the process, including being apart. Some people just get callous to the issues after dealing with them so much.

I wonder if the USCIS has its staff take sensitivity training?

They don't do sensitivity at the Department of Homeland Security.

They're busy keeping up the appearance that they are there to keep you safe.

Feeling all warm and fuzzy yet?

I work for a government agency that deals with the public and also other agencies and my agency all the other agencies we deal with do have sensitivity and customer relations training. I would still believe that the USCIS has some sort of training program for staff dealing with the immigration process.

Well, if they do, then either the program sucks or the employees just need to physically show up for it rather than comprehend and put into action what's being presented. ;)

i agree with that...the system is backward, yes, there are some papers/forms that require a signature, but you can sign your electronic IRS form via the internet/ per pin

I met Luis in 2002, in person for the 1st time in 2003, until 2006 we spent these 3 years seeing each other on vacations only (July and December), 4 weeks at a time. We have to learn to survive the time appart, although when we're waiting it does suck, does make us nervous, and it does feel like an eternity.

Was listening to some program on the radio this past summer, and the guest was some dude high up in the Immigration process. He stated their goal was to get everything to be done electronically! They had budget many millions (cant recall the figure) to start to do this, but I do not recall him stating what their goal date was. As well he mentioned about how there seemed to be many redundancies and was trying to eliminate them. but as we know talk is cheap! At least he was aware of some of the problems

I guess with the amount of paperwork if everything was eletronically made they'd spend less money with staffing.

I do wish I worked with them though, seems like a cool job and pays really well. I love law (graduate in it), love immigration law and love paperwork.
