Hey Everyone,

My wife is in the hospital she has some type of mental illness and really i and the her family are worried we don't know when the hospital is going to release her because her condition is not getting better.

I just arrived here about 3weeks ago and we haven't applied for EAD nor have we applied for AOS; Should we just go ahead and apply for the EAD/AOS or what should we do.... I know that the K3 visa is 2years before expiration. We are hoping she will be better very soon but what if she doesn't until my visa expires, she was diagnose of schizophrenia there is no time limit for this type of mental illness, I have made lots of research on the internet and read that some people with this type of illness could be in the hospital for years...We are seriously praying that her condition gets better. We have been married for 2years now , i really don't know what is going to happen to me i am so confused the family are too.....Right now we don't know what to do; Please VJers remember us in your prayers that my wife gets better.

I'm so sorry to hear about your wife. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

If you do some research on schizophrenia you'll find that many people after diagnosis lead fulfilling and productive lives with medication!

Perhaps they're just keeping her in hospital until she's stabalized on her medication. She could be out soon.

Look on the internet for support groups in your area. I'm sure you'll find them really helpful in knowing more about the illness and being a support. Remember others attending those meetings are living with others also with the mental illness and it can be really helpful to share your experiences.

You could send in your papers now, especially if you're wanting to start working. Is she in the frame of mind however to sign papers? If she wants you to start filling them out, you could do so, then bring them into her when you're visiting her to sign them.

I'm pretty sure, that with the proper medication though, she'll be home with you soon and you could begin the process together.

Hope you have someone close to talk to. Remember the support groups! I'm sure there is one in your area. Maybe at the hospital even?

If working anytime soon is important to you, then file the AOS and EAD as soon as you can. Of course, your wife would need to be able to attend the interview and communicate adequately when there. Tough situation for you.

Please, first and foremost, remember this: the mental illness is not your wife's fault.

Try to find a support system for you, her/your family, and your wife as well. In the meantime, while AOS may not be the best idea at the moment because of her condition, you can file for your EAD while you wait for her to become more stable.

Best of luck.

"Nigerian with crazy wife, I just got here and I dont know what to do, can I get US green card with out her?"

Sorry for being cynical but its the internet, things have to be taken with huge grains of slat sometimes.

It is, but as this is an established VJ account, I doubt I'd be calling troll. At least this one is supportive of his wife and not asking about running away to Florida, so I think he at least deserves some support. Especially since he's not asking "how do I get a green card without her" just asking if they should file EAD/AOS now or later.

This is an established VJ account and is not a troll. Thanks for your concern though. :)

This is very true, I used to work on a Ward. Everything can turn out to be ok.

You can submit the paperwork on your own with the exception of the I-864. If she is lucid you can ask her to sign the paperwork and/or the family for co-sponsorship.

In CA, if you are gravely disabled because of a psychiatric condition the conservator can sign the paperwork for her.
