If you are married to a US Citizen and you are living overseas, you have 2 options, you can read the following guides:

I am from the UK but now married and living with my wife in California. Which one best suits my situation?

I suggest you read here: I-130 Petition and Adjustment of Status

You can read the complete Guides HERE and look for the option that suits your case better.

My best advice, for you now that you're about to start, is to read as much as you can and get well informed, there's plenty info. here in VJ, you can read the guides and do some seraching on the forums as well.

Good luck! :)

Read up on the guidelines on this website - You can file for Adjustment of Status - so download the forms and instructions for I485 (you will need other supporting docs too like I864). Once you go through the instructions and are sufficiently confused, then post your specific questions here. We have all done that or are doing that now. Don't worry, you can do it.

Good Luck

Follow these guides. They may seem confusing at first but what isn't untill you get your feet wet. Just read over it a few times.

I have my social security card already though it says valid for work only with dhs authorization.

Thanks for all info.

That's what it's supposed to say until you get your green card.

Looking at your timeline (you might want to update that to help us help you), I'm guessing you entered the US with a K-1 visa.

Here are two guides that would be helpful to you:

AOS for K-1 and K-3 visa holders

AOS tips for K-1 visa holders

Good luck.

While it seems people have given you a plethora of valid information regarding the various types of visas, it would be great if you could post what visa you did, in fact, enter the US on, so that the answers you get can be better adapted to your situation. I suggest you fill out your timeline to make things easier.

Timeline:

2005-04-14: met online

2005-09-03: met in person

2007-02-26: filed for K-1

2007-03-19: K-1 approved

2007-06-11: K-1 in hand

2007-07-03: arrived in USA

2007-07-21: got married, yay!

2007-07-28: applied for green card

2008-02-19: conditional green card in hand

2010-01-05: applied for removal of conditions

2010-06-14: 10-year green card in hand

2013-11-19: applied for US citizenship

2014-02-10: became a US citizen

2014-02-22: applied for US passport

2014-03-14: received US passport

I agree! From the first post, I understood that the OP is a foreign spouse who got married in the U.S. and lives in the U.S. as well, I imagine he entered under the VWP, as for what I read it seems like they haven't done nor started any immigration process. But I could be wrong...

That's why I suggested him to read the COMPLETE guidelines because he knows better which of all the options apply better to his case.

But it would be great if the OP could give us this info. so the feed back can be more accurate.

I entered from the UK on a K1 visa. I arrived on the 27th July and got married on the 27th September. My visa runs out on the 15th October so i need to get things moving. Thanks for your help so far and i will be back online tomorrow morning and spend the day getting everything i need done. This forum has really been great for me from the start to the finish. One other question is how long will it take me to become a US citizen?

Thanks and will be back on in the am.

Hi Brankster,

Since you entered on a K1 fiancee visa and got married, you now have to file for adjustment of status (AOS).

I'd recommend you start with the K1 flowchart, after "get married". That will give you an outline of the next steps.

Then follow with AFTER MARRIAGE - ADJUSTMENT OF STATUS

Good Luck! and congratulation on your wedding :)
