Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

It's not a formally declared war so Geneva convention is not inplace. Also these are people are not in a recognized uniform therefore also not covered by the Geneva convention. It was the same for members of the resistance during WWII not a recognized military force no protection if you are caught it is totally up to your captors to determine how you will be treated.

I really don't see what the controversy is about.

No country admits to torturing anyone. That doesn't mean they don't torture. Every country has used torture at some point in it's lifespan and most likely still uses it to some degree. We're just told that we don't employ it anymore because "we've become too civilized." Yeah, right. I've got some beach front property in Nevada to sell you too, if that's the case.

Is torture the best thing to use? Probably not. Is it still used? Absolutely. Is the U.S. the only industrialized nation to covertly use torture? Not by a long shot.

So once again... why the shock? It's just how things work. You didn't actually believe government agencies and military forces, when capturing someone they required information from who refused to talk, would just "give up" or offer him or her a "suite at the Ritz and all an expense-paid vacation to the Bahamas," did you? ;)

It is also safe to say that not everyone's definition of torture is the same. The fact that the war in Iraq is so unpopular with the public also influences the unpopularity of perceived torture methods and magnifies every controversial incident that has occurred in this war.

In a different, time, place, and circumstance some of these issues would be non-issues or perceived in a different light.

As for me...I perceive methods such as waterboarding as torture, but sleep depravation I would not consider torture as long as it is not life threatening. I also would not consider the use of fear as being torture.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

There have been incidents outside of the Iraq war, peejay. The American government has illegally abducted, held and tortured citizens of allied nations. American government officials are, for such offenses, sought by Interpol for their crimes.
