Hey all,

My fiance is Dominican and i heard that it is currently taking from 2-3 years for the process! I havnet even started the petiton paper work. I was wondering if this is true and if there is any other way that i could get him here to the US. Im at a lose for words, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it is, Those from the Dominican Republic have over a year to wait for the interview after the petition has been approved. The average is 533 days according to the site timelines. If your fiancee can get legal resident status in another country, it may be much faster getting an interview.

The catch 22 is establishing legal permanent residency... not so easy to do I would guess..

K-1/K-3/IR1(CR1) all seem to take approx. the same amount of time for interviews in DR so nothing substantial is gained (at least appears that way)

YMMV

In that case, would it be faster to get married and then apply for the K-3 visa???

I've seen cases here on VJ where they have waited about 2 years. And yes, it's an issue at the DR embassy. Each case gets a # and the number keeps getting bumped up over time. Kind of like the # you get at the DMV office and wait for it to be called. (bad example I guess). So yeah, unfortunately, you're looking at a looooooooooooong wait ahead of you. But hey, the sooner you apply, the sooner he'll be here.

You cant just go to another country, you have to establish legal residency in that country. What that takes, and how long that takes varies by country. But for some countries it may be faster than to wait the 1-2 years for an interview in Dominican Republic. Pretty much any country is faster than Dominican Republic when it comes to interviews.

Right. I totally understand that but regardless if he were to go to another country he would still need to interview in DR. Then the whole petition time here....just seems impossible.

He would have his interview in the Dominican Republic unless, he can establish permanent residency in another country. Then he can have the interview in that country. But that may or may not be an option depending on your situation, and it could possibly take more time than it would just to wait.

You could get married in another country and have the K-3 processed there. Several couples from the DR are doing this because of the bad wait. (Unfortunately now the US consulate in Ecuador is acting crazy)

Check our dominicanstotheusa.com for more info. It is a great site of info!!!

Have him move to Cuba and establish residency there. They get expedited processing because it supposedly takes longer to get through that embassy than any other (haha). The Domenican Republic has the worst wait of any country, by far.

I feel for you! I hope you can find a quicker way to be together.
