BLOOMINGTON, IL — Neighbors were impressed by local man Marcus Hardwick, who took the time to pass on generational knowledge to his son about how to change your car's oil yourself, so it will take longer and cost more.

Learning to change a car's oil yourself is an important skill to learn if you want to waste time and money, according to MotorTrend magazine, a sentiment Hardwick said he believes is important to pass on to his children.

It does seems relatively simple, but I wouldn't do it myself unless I really have to.

I found a shop that will use my oil & filter and charge me only for labor.  Perhaps the best of both worlds.

My boys and the Hillbilly change the oil themselves. I don't think this guy knows what he is talking about being more time or costs more. I do know ppl who have been royally screwed over by these some of these oil change shops. It ended up costing them way way more. One person blew the motor and no the oil place does not have to pay for repairs when they mess up.

Dad taught me how to change oil and filter and other maintenance tasks before I turned 13 and since that time I have never paid for that service on a car or a boat or when I was racing karts then cars.

 

Guess I'm pretty much a do it yourself kind of guy.

Could I change the oil?  Yes.  Do I change the oil?  No.  Hubs does but he also won't let the dealership change the oil because he has decided they use "cheap 💩", despite it being full synthetic, that doesn't pass his standards.  *cue eyeroll*

 

The trade off: I end up taking the used oil to the county recycle center because he won't.  I also have to do the things my hands better fit at.  In the case of the jeep when we had it, my hand fit in to change the stupid ABS wheel sensor that was causing a giant headache by making the jeep misbehave.  On the one truck, I got stuck changing the back most spark plugs because my hands fit.

Not oil or cars, but...

 

Early in our marriage, I returned home one eve to find that Mrs. T-B. had pulled a toilet and replaced the hosed wax ring beneath it.  She needed my help only to re-lift the toilet to position it back over the floor bolts.  The new wax ring endured just fine for quite a long time.
