There are certainties life: death, taxes, and the ever-present risk of India and Pakistan going to war — and the latest spark could prove to be Tuesday's jihadi Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist attack that left at least 26 non-Muslims dead on the Indian side of the long-disputed Kashmir region.

Visegrád 24 reported today that New Delhi announced "strong measures against Pakistan," including cancelling South Asia-regional SAARC visas for Pakistani visitors, closing the Wagah border crossing, and suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) governing the allocation of water from the region's major rivers.

SAARC visa-holders will have to leave within 48 hours, but according to Visegrád 24, closing Wagah is more serious.  "Pakistan will instead have to rely on costlier routes via third countries or ports, increasing import costs and inflation," the outlet reported.  "The Lahore region will face immediate economic hardship, unemployment, and potential social unrest."

The first is an inconvenience, the kind of diplomatic #######-for-tat you'd expect after an attack like Tuesday's.  The Wagah closure is a more serious measure, but won't bring immediate hardship, and it's easy enough to reopen as a de-escalation measure.  But suspending the IWT, Islamabad has previously stated, "could amount to an act of war."  [...]

Trump Calls Kashmir Terror Attack 'Deeply Disturbing' as Sickening Details Emerge

 

Early on Tuesday afternoon, Donald Trump wrote on TruthSocial:  "Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir.  The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism.  We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured.  Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies.  Our hearts are with you all!"

Trump was referring to a jihad attack in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, which has been a hotbed of jihad activity for decades.  The Associated Press reported that "assailants indiscriminately fired at tourists visiting a beauty spot in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said.  Police said it was a 'terror attack' carried out by militants fighting against Indian rule near the disputed region's resort town of Pahalgam."  This report, like virtually all establishment media reports about jihad activity, was reticent to the point of being actively misleading about who the attackers really were.

A Wednesday Times of India report offered more clarity.  It stated that "the three terrorists suspected to have carried out the deadly Pahalgam attack used specific code names, Moosa, Yunus, and Asif, to mask their identities during the operation that killed 28 people, mostly tourists."  Moosa, Yunus and Asif were "identified as Asif Shaikh, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha, all of whom are believed to be operatives of The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy."  Lashkar-e-Taiba ("Army of the Righteous") is a jihad group operating out of Pakistan.

Can India and Pakistan Back Away From the Abyss of Nuclear War?

 

India and Pakistan seem to move inexorably toward war as rhetoric and retaliatory action were ratcheted up since a bloody massacre of 26 people by the Pakistan-sponsored group called Kashmir Resistance on Tuesday; see Terror in India: Attack Leaves Dozens Dead During JD Vance's Visit – RedState.  This is not the first terror attack in Kashmir, but this one was in a tourist spot, and eyewitness reports say that the gunmen singled out non-Muslims for execution.

India has launched a major military operation against Pakistan in a major escalation of tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The missile strikes early Wednesday morning targeted “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Pakistan administered-Kashmir, according to India. Pakistan has denied the claim, saying the attack largely harmed civilians – killing at least three, including a child, and injuring at least a dozen.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the country had the right to respond to what he described as an “act of war,” adding that a “befitting reply is being given.”

Kashmir is one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints and is controlled in part by India and Pakistan but both countries claim it in its entirety.

Relations between India and Pakistan have cratered in recent weeks following a deadly rampage by gunmen who murdered 26 people, the majority Indian tourists, at a scenic spot in Kashmir.

India says military stations attacked by Pakistan drones and missiles

JAMMU, India/ISLAMABAD, May 8 (Reuters) - Blasts rang out across the Indian city of Jammu late on Thursday during what the government said was a Pakistani drone and missile attack on military stations around the Kashmir region on the second day of clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

Sirens sounded and red flashes and projectiles erupted in the night sky above Jammu for about 2-1/2 hours, a Reuters journalist said, in what appeared to be an escalation in the countries' worst confrontation in more than two decades.

Two days of fighting have killed nearly four dozen people.

"Military stations at Jammu, Pathankot & Udhampur were targeted by Pakistani-origin drones and missiles along the international border in J&K today," India's Ministry of Defence said on X, citing places in and near the federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

"The threats were swiftly neutralised .... No casualties or material losses were reported."
