My interview appointment is coming up this Wednesday and I have a couple of logistical questions, if anyone has similar experience:

  • I'm applying based on marriage (3 years permanent residency) with a pending Removal of Condition application. USCIS hasn't mentioned anything about a combo interview, but should I assume that it will be? My USC husband is already planning to tag along so just curious if they'll let him in to the interview appointment with me.
  • How much earlier than the stated appointment time should we arrive at the field office? I'm scheduled for 9:15 AM, does showing up at the front entrance at 8:45 suffice or should we arrive even earlier?

Thank you!

Should be prepared for it to be a combo interview; but a lot of threads here have also noted that if the interview letter doesn't request your husband they likely won't let him inside with you. But, having him outside so he can be brought in is good even in that situation.

As for appt. time, 30min early is reasonable; if you arrive too early they won't let you inside to wait.

In our case, wife received an email from the local office only two days before her N-400 interview informing her that I was required to be there because it would be a combo interview.  Luckily I had been preparing for a combo the entire time....and I was ready with required evidence.  Officer wanted to see evidence of us living together from the day we submitted the I-751 until combo interview date.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

I've also seen almost no one (only one person since I've been in these forums) who applied in the early period before their 3 or 5 years get an interview scheduled before the official 3 year or 5 year date passes. In theory you're earlier in the queue thanks to the application priority date, but you're best to start your internal mental clock when the 3 or 5 years actually passes.

Each case is unique. The timelines vary. I hope you get good new soon!

Technically, you can sue USCIS for decision on day 121 after interview.

Yeah, exactly this. It's the reason so many are obsessed with applying as early as possible. It's a race to the INTERVIEW - delayed background checks, misplaced files, chaotic administration, backlogged and understaffed offices, RFEs, cancelled interviews, civil unrest, and the list goes on and on and on. There are people who easily wait upwards of 8 months just for the interview, and during all this times there is NOTHING you can do. You're at the mercy of the "processing times." Once the interview happens, they have exactly 120 days to adjudicate. It doesn't matter that the ground opened up and swallowed the entire building, staff, and file -  they make a decision or you sue in federal court. Really, it's much better to get the interview regardless of what else USCIS might still be waiting to get or complete.

I understand that, but it’s hard to wait, especially when you have no idea if it will be two days, weeks, or several months. I literally can't concentrate on anything. I'm sure it will get easier with time.

Soon the situation will be updated and the oath ceremony  scheduled.

It's sincerely more relaxing to have your interview behind you not ahead of you. For you don't know whether it will be approved or not.

Now, you know it's approved, you are just wanting for your files to get to your local office.

Congratulations 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉

Not approved yet,  no decision has been made due to a missing file. Regardless, we will all be worried until we have our passports. Good luck to us all!

When you pass the test,it means that it's good 👍. If not, the officer would have told you that you failed!

Just relax and tell to yourself that the most difficult part is now behind you.

Did you receive an N-652 after your interview? That form provides you some details about the interview results.

Run an API USCIS report, it will show some codes or event codes relevant to your case. (See the N-400 February 2025 filers thread for further details about API results.)

Thank you! There was some activity two days after the interview, but I assume it was just a soft touch since no code was generated. After that, there was no further update. My attorney will contact the supervisor to ask about the status. I'm very worried that my A file is lost.

Yes, I have N-652 that has " a decision cannot be made yet."
