Since this is mostly related to the UK, I will post it here.  The comments are interesting.

The Iran War Reveals Who Is Living In A Fantasy World

Here in the 21st century, the UK has pursued its net zero fantasy with a vengeance. Wind turbines and solar panels now cover the countryside. Many power plants that use coal or other fossil fuels have been closed. Perhaps most important, the UK has banned essentially all exploration for and development of fossil fuel energy within its own borders, including offshore in territorial waters. Although there are large shale-gas formations beneath the UK, the practice of “fracking” to exploit them has been subject to a moratorium since 2019, and the current Labour government has vowed to make that moratorium permanent. The current government has also not issued any new licenses for drilling for oil or gas in the North Sea, and says it will continue that policy, although a small amount of drilling continues under pre-existing licenses.

The logic of these policies appears simple: carbon emissions damage the environment, and after all, we can get all the energy we need from the free and abundant wind and sun.

Into this mix has dropped the Iran war, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Maybe things were not as simple as they had seemed.

In the past few days, a serious shortage of aviation fuel has arisen in the UK. The shortage is not limited to the UK, but apparently is particularly acute in that country. From the Daily Mail today:

[The] Iran war has continued to wreak havoc on the aviation industry, and the UK could soon be experiencing a jet fuel shortage. The last known shipment of jet fuel to Britain from the Middle East is expected to arrive within 48 hours amid alarm over shortages within a week. Data providers Kpler and Vortexa say the consignment on the Libyan-flagged Maetiga vessel is expected to reach the UK from Saudi Arabia on Thursday. The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing conflict means no other cargoes heading to the UK from the region can be seen on the water, they added.

Sort of funny but seems OK to buy from Norway but not develop your own resources but this a tiny bit of the story, an accumulation of issues that have inevitable consequences, chickens coming home to roost.

Always amuses me to read the Guardian, very Net Zero etc etc and then they do not like the results. When they have been supporting policies that bring with them issues and then complain about the problems they created, well give me a break.

Allianz sues six people alleged to have been part of Palestine Action protests
Insurance company seeking almost £300,000 for protests at UK offices, during which red paint was daubed on buildings

Short version is that they deliberately or negligently caused damage so are being sued, not clear if the organisation is also being sued. Quite why they thought they can damage property and not suffer the consequences is unclear but we are not talking about the brightest.

Sounds like it's beyond too far gone.

The Islamification of Britain

In Britain, March meant Ramadan.  My local supermarket advised me to "Make this holy month meaningful" and offered "everything you need for Iftar, Suhoor, and beyond," including a range of halal foods.  At televised Premiership football matches, play stopped to allow Muslim players to break their fast.  Days before Eid, Muslims gathered in London's Trafalgar Square to pray in public.  The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, hailed the "power of being Muslim" as he addressed thousands at the "biggest Iftar in the Western world."

It's not that Britons have undergone mass conversion to Islam or, for the most part, have a deep interest in religious practices.  Indeed, a leading politician sparked debate by condemning London's mass public prayer gathering, and boos rang out around the stadium when a big screen announced that the match between Leeds and Manchester City would pause at sunset to allow Muslim players to break their fasts.

Rather, a growing Muslim population has become more confident in asserting its identity, while Britain's political and cultural elite increasingly insists upon respect for Islam as a show of support for the supposedly progressive values of diversity, multiculturalism, and anti-racism.  The result is not just tolerance of Muslims but an extending Islamification of all aspects of British society.  [...]
