So basically the main reason people want to go somewhere else is because they are broke-аss poor?

No, not us. I have no family here in the States...there's really nothing here for me. If it weren't for this suck a$ joint custody I have to endure for my daughter's sake I would have emigrated to Canada already. His family are all I have. It ain't got a dam thing to do with finances. :)

Well, it just seems to me that people who are doing well in the US want to stay, and those who aren't want to move:

Me and Edi have been saving money for the whole year he has been here. We will continue to save money for the next 10 years and then go back to Romania, start our own business and live very very happy and comy right there :)
I'd love to retire in Russia, I had a wonderful trip but there are a few things that have to happen first...save lots of money and learning Russian are the main two...

Heck, if the 401(k) was bigger, I would have moved that way instead of her coming here!

Plus lots of cheap good vodka.
We hope to retire to Nepal someday... our measly retirement checks should go a lot further over there!
Britain is well worth a visit, I highly recommend it, but the cost of living there at the moment is horrifically high. The average house prices at the moment are:

Average Cost: £210,578 ( $427,325)

Detached: £323,332 ($656, 137)

Semi-detached: £189,617 ($384,789)

Terraced: £168,134 ($341,194)

Flat/apartment: £196,505 ($398,767)

I know that my bread is buttered far better over here, hence that is why I am staying. Holidays to the UK are definitely on the agenda for the future though.

I love the US (i'm the USC by the way) but it seems harder to be super well off here. I think the opportunities are now greater elsewhere... I may be wrong, but that's what I'm sticking with for now.

Just consider me and my husband not in this category. Is that so hard for you or anyone else to actually consider?

I just love the political showdowns!! I love and feed off USA haters. Why come here, then? Haahahah. Too funny. Maybe this is why so many people wish to return to their fiance(e)'s homeland. Bein chased away by little 'ol GWB. Just breaks my heart, really. :pop::lol:

Hate to break it to ya Jason, but not everyone's reasons for leaving and going to their spouse's country are political. BTW, I'm the USC here and our reasons for going back to Canada one day do not have anything whatsoever to do with politics...or money...or whatever the heck you people want to argue about.

This has seriously gone off topic. Sheesh!

Ok, maybe it was a 1 bedroom - I forget - but it was a very nice place, with a doorman and all.

Plus his employer (an *American* investment bank, incidentally) paid for it, so who was he to argue?

£1200 pw - 1 bedroom flat to rent in London SW7

If it wasn't for the darn political instability in Ethiopia, I'd love to retire there. 13 months of sunshine. Well, maybe they get something figured out there until we get to retirement.

Going back to Germany at some point mighyt be an option as well - if folks outside the metro areas ever get used to seeing an interracial couple.

Have you tried Haslach, outside of Memmengin? Yes, people do stare, but they are pretty friendly down there. My sis-in-law,despite her dark complexion, has never complained of harrassment there. She loves Germany so much, she just received her German citizenship!!! Something to consider. ;)

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that your friend's experience is not what the average person pays, just like the average person in New York doesn't pay $1.2 million to live in the lower East Side.

ok, well firstly we are doing very well here. We have had this planned for 4 years to do this. We also know that it costs over $200,000.00 to buy a decent home in the US where in Romania we can get one with 10-15 acres of land for $10,000. And the whole reason for starting a business there instead of retiring early which i could do in 10 yrs moving back to Romania, is bc i dont know how to live without having somewhere to go everyday and work.

Does this answer your question? LOL me no broke a$$ :D.....me just dont want to spend the next 30 yrs working to retire in the US :)

No offense to mawilson but I don't think people even need to defend themselves about whether he thinks they are poor or not. Even if someone is poor, it's not our business. I'm not poor but I could always do with more money! Couldn't everyone?

It's wise that if living in another country, that you also like being in, will be better financially in the long run for you then it's a good decision.

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

I know I used to pay £400 pw for my flat in London, which is about 4x what I'm paying

now for my lovely rent-controlled apartment in the village.

Don't tell me they still have rent control in NYC??

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I live in Virginia and pay more than 1000 per month in rent. I wish I could pay the current monthly average for Russia. Would be half. I just don't think it would be the best place to raise children. if Sasha and I had no plans to have children, Russia wouldnt be so bad at all. But bringing children into the picture changes things. I'm not saying that its terrible there, but if you had to choose which schools would be better or which hospitals would be better, etc. you can't help but think that America would be more safe and advanced. I was in Europe when I needed my face surgically reconstructed due to an accident. Dutch doctors wanted to perform the surgery. i felt uncomfortable with this. I chose to go home and have it done there. Good thing I did. Doctors in virginia found a serious problem that the Dutch doctors never noticed. Would have eventually cost me my left eye. American doctors put 40,000 dollars worth of titanium in my face to fix my problem. Worked beautifully. Forgive my tangent, but what i'm trying to say is that after this incident and after being in a few Russian hospitals, i'm scared to death to live anywhere away from American medicine and institutes. Yep, have to say that this is the big reason I wouldn't retire or move to Russia. If it was our last solution for being together forever, then i would do it. Ever been treated in an Eastern European hospital? Fun, huh?

And how much did you pay in brokers fees to get that or was it in the family? $200 a week is hardly the norm if you are not one of the lucky few to get a sweet rent-controlled apartment. Most apartments I see in NYC around the $1500/month range are 4th floor walk-up broom closets.

You don't have to pay 400 squids a week for a nice place in London. I had a big one bedroom flat in a great area with a garden for 650 pounds a month (much less than I pay for a lesser property in LA) and there were plenty more like it for less than a grand.

We have rent control in parts of Hollywood, Santa Monica and other places, though it ain't what it used to be.

 No kidding!

Mawilson - time to get out of your bubble & basing your idea of London prices on one very expensive flat from 1995.

I paid far more for my flat in NYC & I got it rent controlled in 1998. My London rent was half of my NYC rent & had a garden.
