I've found that coming into the States my bags were never opened. But when I would go back to the UK I always had the locks cut off of them.

There was a travel programme in the UK last year that covered damage done to UK travellers' luggage by the US security services. Many people had irreparable damage done to their luggage when it had the inbuilt locks in. They couldn't be used again and they weren't entitled to any money back to help them cover their losses.

They then found out that any losses in said luggage were not covered by their insurance companies, yes you've guessed it, because their luggage had no locks on any more.

Travel companies' recommendations were to use baggage that didn't have inbuilt locks in and use this type of lock on the luggage. With regards to the insurance they said that many insurance companies were now starting to cover incidences of lost items due to security personnel leaving the bags unlocked. However, if you use the type of lock I've listed above, the security personnel can open these types of locks and then relock them, meaning that your bag remains secure throughout your journey.

In my experience they didn't damage my bag, merely cut off the lock and placed it back into the bag, with a card saying I had been inspected. Both times.

Sujeet's luggage had built in locks, and he never had to open them at the 1st POE when he came here. He's also been back to India twice with locked luggage, which was never opened or broken. When I went to India I put small locks on my luggage, also never opened. So I guess it's a game of risk.

As a side note, pay special attention to the rules about what you can carry on board the aircraft... any liquid items you have need to be of a 3oz size or less and all of them together must fit into a quart-size ziploc bag. This includes lip gloss, lip stick, toothpaste, etc... any liquid-based items.

I never check a suitcase when I travel domestically and I have gotten so good at the 3-oz or less program that I can fit 10 days worth of liquids in a 1-quart bag! I hate waiting for luggage at baggage claim.

i wont be carrying lipsticks deos etc in handbag as u said

i would rather carry them in other luggages

even my hubby just told me that my luggages shoudlnt have any battery item on , that wont make it suspicious for checking

though i wasnt sure how much liquid we can carry for the other luggages - like i really have some very good perfumes my hubby presented me i donot want to leave them in india

You could try using keyring fobs. I use them to keep the two zipps in place. Never had any trouble so far whilst travelling, plus if they want to get into the suitcase they can.

My wife's and my suitcase was inspected when we flew from the Philippines to San Francisco last month. When we got the suitcase from the carousel there was a red sticker taped across it that said "Security Checked." This was my 4th trip to and from the Philippines, but the only time the luggage was opened by TSA. Not locking the suitcase was an issue because the latch can easily pop open when not locked. I bought a latching strap to put around the suitcase to keep it closed.

You can buy these special TSA locks at nearly all International airports. Duty Free and other shops in the airports sell them for a reasonable price. TSA can unlock these locks and search, then relock your bags.

i too will be buying the tsa locks now i told my mom about this , gosh i was so dumb about this bag locking system though people have undoubtedly travelled without problms even after locking the baggages
