You can lock your bags. TSA asks you not to, but they won't fine you if you do. If they want to search your bags, they'll break the locks and leave a note in your luggage telling you that your luggage was searched.

Approved locks can be found at Sharper Image, Brookstone, Macy's, among others. But I don't think you're in the US yet, are you? If not, just lock your luggage and let them open it up if they want to/need to. Most bags don't get opened, play the odds.

If you lock them, you will risk the locks being broken if your luggage is needed to be inspected. Check this link.... it's worth browsing around the TSA site too...

doc,

Carry jewelry and all papers (not just passport/visa but birth cert, marriage cert, college transcripts) with you. Don't pack that stuff in your checkin luggage.

mala, don't forget to lock the gold up in a safe deposit box and insure it once you're here. too many indian women dont do it and end up regretting it... at least in NJ it is common knowledge that indian newlyweds have lots and lots of gold in the house so there are quite a few home invasions.
