I generally don't mind when people talk in foreign languages. Some of them are just beautiful sounding and it doesn't bother me at all. The only thing that occasionally irks me is when people are obviously talking about someone else and speaking in a foreign language so they don't know it. The glares, the snickering, the pointing... it reminds me of girls back in grade-school speaking those made-up languages so they could make fun of other girls without getting in trouble.

Even if someone did that to me, it still wouldnt bother me. If they have something to say to me then they can tell me in either English, Spanish or Portuguese or even sign language. Otherwise, I would not even pay attention. ;)

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

My husband def. talks louder in his native language than in English.
Not bothered by any language; in fact some are very plesant to hear, but sometime the volume is rather irritating and distracting to the point that I just stare at them until they walk away or lower their voices. Is it possible that the louder the voice the higher the insecurity is since I find that new immigrants of certain areas tend to over do it more than others.

that would bother me even if they were speaking English

When my husband was in romania, when he talked in his sleep he spoke in english, now that hes here in florida, he talks in his sleep in romanian :bonk::P

It doesn't bother me when I hear people talking in another language. I'm Spanish and it helps a lot like when my neighbor was robbed and he was trying to tell the police what was stolen and he needed me to translate.

At my job, a guy that called me about connecting him to another number got so pissed listening to someone else talk spanish that he was one of those saying "this is America, land of the free, blah blah blah"

I don't mind most languages but I think spanish irks me mainly because of the government bending over backwards (our MVD booklet is available in Spanish and English) to please the spanish speakers, what about the Russian speakers or the German speakers, the French?!

There are people at my work that are from the Philippinest, they speak to each other in other then English... we also have some veitnamese and chinese that speak to each other and THAT doesn't bother me at all!

Hearing other people talk just makes me want to learn their language cause it sounds so great.

Me, too. That is one of the reasons I was interested in Spanish. I saw a girl translating one time, and I was intrigued. If she did it, so could I.

So, I would definitely say it makes me curious.

My husband says that if he could have any power it would be to understand every person who talks to him as if they were speaking his language (Arabic) and to be able to speak his language and everyone understand him as if he were speaking theirs.

Moody-My husband and his family speak loudly in Arabic. Sometimes my MIL will talk or shout (what I see as shouting) and I will get worried. What's wrong? Is she mad? - He says no. That is just how she talks. I tell him all the time, you are screaming at your mom! Don't do that. He says he's not screaming, that's just their tone. Oh well.

People talking in another language don't bother me at all - it's probably the one that they feel most comfortable in. Doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't trying to understand the main language. My mom and I talk in her native language just because she finds it hard to communicate certain things to me in English.

What does irk me is when people get angry at me for not being able to communicate to them in their own native language - just because I'm Asian doesn't mean I know all the eastern languages! I've been accused of "pretending" not to speak their language before, which is so silly. -_-

Also, people having yelling conversations at each other drive me batty, in any kind of language.

There is a time and place for everything. Depending on the situation, I could be annoyed by other nationalities speaking their native tongues, but for the most part, I could care less.

I enjoy trying to figure out what language it is they're speaking. I know some French, German and Spanish, so they're fairly easy to pick out, though I don't always know what they're saying exactly. I once had a German lady call me a nasty name in German and then walk right on by. I turned around and said "hey, I understood that!" The look on her face was priceless  And when I was a teen, my friend's brothers used to speak about me in French, and then I'd sit there and translate *to her* to tell her how rude her brothers were :P (they were born in Quebec, she was a few years younger, and born in Ontario and never bothered to learn French).

I like languages, I wish I was fluent in more than just Canadian, English and American ;)
