Is it that time again already?? I better get crackin. I haven't even thought about Ramadan yet.

This will be Moh's first Ramadan away from family and friends in Egypt so I'm gonna try to make it a good one for him. It'll be nice having someone around for Ramadan after having spent the past three of them alone. We'll probably cook more at home than usual and visit with friends more. It feels weird having Ramadan in late summer/early fall this year.

I believe Tam will be returning on Sept. 10 so unfortunately she won't have the pleasure of spending Ramadan in Egypt.

Here's hoping those of you waiting for loved ones are together in time for Ramadan and/or Eid. (F)

I haven't done a darn thing to prepare for Ramadan yet. I celebrate it with pride as I know it is something required of me to do but honestly...I soooooooooooooooooooooo dread it. I'm the most thirsty person alive so its not the "not eating" that bothers me..it is the not drinking. I'm sure I'll manage as I did last year enshallah. The food DOES always taste better during Ramadan!! So at least I can look forward to that!

Yeah, I can do without eating too. It's the thirst that gets to me. I look forward to making Wudu during Ramadan just so I can feel the water inside my mouth...lol.

My husband "might" possibly be arriving before the end of Ramadan, Inshallah. He's not going to be too happy about celebrating Ramadan over here. :(

Enchallah I will spending my second Ramadan with my husband. (not alone)... and elhamdullah it just around the corner. Get those holiday recipes posted ladies... I would just love some ideas on Eid celebrations, legends, Ramadan/Eid stories, favourite Ramadan books for children...esp ideas for the children, as many people tend to forget to make it extra special for them.

Anyway mine to add:

Egyptian children hanging latterns Fawanee. Fatimid Caliph Al Hakim Bi-Amr Illah wanted to light the streets of Cairo during Ramadan nights, so he ordered all the sheikhs of mosques to hang Fawanees that could be illuminated by candles. As a result, the Fawanee became a custom that has never been abandoned.

Getting new outfits for the big celebration on Eid day.

Drummers in Iraq who rouses ... in which children go on a door-to-door search for candy while singing:

And the everlasting beloved songs sang after the closing prayer of Tarawee.

Books for children:1) "Ramadan," by Suhaib Hamid Ghazi

Enhanced with beautiful drawings, this lovely book covers all the special traditions of the month through the eyes of Hakeem, a Muslim boy in America. Awarded Book of the Year by the National Council for the Social Studies in 1997.

2) "Three Muslim Festivals," by Ibrahim Ali Aminah and A. Ghazi (Eds.)

A collection of stories about the three main celebrations in Isalm: Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. Told through the eyes of children and illustrated with lovely watercolors, this book captures the warmth of the holidays and traditions.

3) "Celebrating Ramadan," by Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith

This new book (September 2001) follows Ibraheem, a Muslim fourth-grader, as he and his family observe the holy month of Ramadan. Photographs accompany the brief yet comprehensive text, making this a quality introduction.

4) "Magid Fasts for Ramadan," by Mary Matthews

This charming story captures the excitement of a young boy trying to fast his first Ramadan. While it is not required for him to fast, he is determined to make it through the day.

I know the times that I have been with Hicham during Ramadan...the hardest part is not getting kisses all day!!!

It is funny that some people think kissing or touching is not allowed during Ramadan, since it is allowed...as long as it is not sexual in nature and does not lead to sexual thoughts or actions. Or saliva exchanged. In fact it is recommended to embrace your family during Ramadan to increase the communal feeling and purpose of Ramadan.
