I have a CR1 visa, I want to travel to the US, but first I am trying to find a job (in data science) and pass the interviews then I can travel within a week.

Will that be possible ?

Or companies will cancel the offer once they figure that i still do not have SSN (even if it is on the way)?

Please share your experiences.. thanks!

  • you  can apply to US companies at any time
  • Company will handle the SS  #  (as applied for )  and have u do a W9 OR have u file a W8 untill SS   #  when u would file W9 with new SS # recd/  this is done per HR and company rules

Foreign person. If you are a foreign person, do not use Form W-9. Instead, use the appropriate Form W-8 (see Publication 515, Withholding of Tax on Nonresident Aliens and Foreign Entities).

Federal taxes on income is withheld per pay periods and company has to turn in federal taxes,  medicare and SS monies for each quarter so they have a little lea way before needing SS #

if you paid (the employer)  wages subject to employment taxes with the IRS for each quarter by the last day of the month that follows the end of the quarter

So,  example :

For work Jan 1st to March 31st,  company would need SS # to send in with your withheld monies by end of April

Yes.

However, I'd suggest you travel early to get accustomed to things. 1 week isn't enough to get to know your daily route, how things work etc

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.
