Avianca has two flights for the day that I want to arrive.

Early: 6:44AM MDE to MIA 10:20AM

Later: 1:05PM MDE to MIA 4:35PM

I need to be on a flight that leaves at 9:41 PM later that day.

I need to know if 5 hours is plenty of time to go through the Customs and Border Control for my wife's CR1/IR1 registration

and transfer our bags to a new airline, if I was to arrive at 4:35PM or should I arrive at the earlier time to be safe 10:20AM.

Which will give me 11 hours to play with.

If I am not mistaken, I think MIA has a military relaxing facility that we can wait out the day if we have to arrive at the earlier time. I do hold a military ID card.

Can anyone give their experiences on waiting in line to see the officer and then being sent to secondary. How much time should I need to allocate for?

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Passed there within 30 mins last time. Immigrant line, I'd say 1 hour. So, you should be good.
