Hi there:

my fiance and i have been talking about my wedding dress and looking online together. we found some web sites that we like. however, i'm not sure about the quality and how fit it would be without trying it on like we can do at a bridal shop.

my question is: Has anyone ordered a wedding dress online before? please share your experience with me and from what web site.

i appreciate your time and sharing. :)

you might save that way - but you will need to find a good seamstress as well at a good price to make it worthwhile

I bought mine on eBay, new, for $90. It was a discontinued style.

I figured most wedding dresses look about the same once you decide on a general style. And no matter the gown, you're going to get it altered anyway (so that's a sunk cost.) The gown I found was a size or two larger than I normally wear (wedding dresses run smaller than other dresses), so it could be taken in easily.

The bridal world in Baldwin, NY is really good. I found them online and since I lived in NYC back then I went there personally. Their gowns are nice, so is their service, so you can definitely order from them. :)

EITHER WAY, you should go to a few local bridal stores and just figure out what your *average* size in a wedding dress is..

I'm normally a 0/1 in dresses but I'm a 6 in most wedding dresses...

so, don't approximate.. go out and figure it out for yourself that way

Thanks a lot!!

please keep your experience coming....

on the web sites, they have size charts. would you need to find a seamstress to do a measurement for you? is it difficult to find one in the US?

I appreciate your tresponses. :)

size charts don't always correspond with dresses..

ask any groom or groomsman in a wedding if the measurements he gave the rental place helped him get the right jacket the first time..

When I bought my dress, the seller included the bust, waist, and hip measurements, which helped. But I think liz has the right idea. Go to a david's bridal, try on a few styles, and see where you average around.

When we got married, we were on a tight budget, as we already had 3 little boys - I popped into David's Bridal just to browse, the offered me a credit card with a $1000 limit, and they told me they were having a sale, dresses started at $90 - I found a great dress, I spent less than $300 on my entire outfit, and I used the credit card just for the sheer coolness of having an option to pay it off instead of one lump sum.

I bought mine online on Ebay, and payed $120 for it, and couldn't have been happier with the outcome. The dress was exactly as it was shown in the picture, and I had taken my bust, hip and waist measurements myself and still managed to have the dress fit perfectly.

There are lots of extremely cheap and gorgeous dresses all over ebay, so it takes the stress out of searching endlessly. My only recommendation with that sight is make sure if you do buy from someone there, they have sold to at least 10 people before and they have a high feedback rating, just to show that they are trustworthy:)

Keep in mind alterations for a wedding dress can run into several hundred - esp if it needs major revisions because you bought it too big/small online....

This is true, but... chances are you're not going to buy the David's Bridal dress right off the rack, either. Most wedding gowns have to be altered to fit the bride because most wedding gowns are sold 'long.' (If you're really tall and not curvy this might not be an issue.) I'm petite but, uh, busty, so any dress that fit in the bodice was going to be too big in the waist and about 12 inches too long.

I figured that any dress I bought would have to be altered significantly, so I could pay several hundred dollars and then another $300 on alterations, or $90 and then another $300 on alterations. So while alterations were expensive, I think I still came out ahead on the deal.
