Iranian with Australian Passport B2 Tourist Visa - Administrative Processing

I'm Iranian Australian and a holder of both passports. I applied for USA B2 tourist visa while I was in Europe. Bratislava had the quickest interview times so that's where I had my interview.

The next day the officer emailed me further questions which I replied to immediately. Upon further checking now, I believe it was DS-5535 form, however it was those questions in a regular word document, not an official form. The day after she emailed me saying your case has gone to administrative processing. She said it might take several months. I just want to go to the US and Mexico for holidays so it doesn't bother me too much how long it takes. But it's been over a year now and I haven't heard back from them. Is that normal? Any help on this matter will be appreciated. I just wonder what have they been doing for one whole year? I'm just a regular guy with a regular life.

I may be normal particularly with countries where the US has no real diplomatic relations.  Unfortunately there is nothing you can really do except wait and hope for a positive outcome.

Don't Australia have their own version of ESTA?

ESTA and the VWP have limitations as to who is and who is not eligible.

Under the Act, travelers in the following categories are no longer eligible to travel or be admitted to the United States, without a waiver, under the VWP:

Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Iraq, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen at any time on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions); and
Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Iraq, Syria, Iran, North Korea or Sudan.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
