K1 changing name.

Hello VJ,

 

My fiance doesn't have a last name on her passport and when she got approved for the K1 it came as FNU Sandy.  Once we get married can she have a different last name then me? Example Bobby Singh and Sandy Kaur. I wanted to know if this will cause an issues? Should we wait until she gets her green card to change the name?

If it’s a different name from yours, I believe she will have to change it through the court and get a court order

Any name she wishes to use moving forward must appear on the MC in any format.

 

 

 

She'll have to go the legal route to do what you wish to do and that should be done when applying for citizenship so it doesn't affect the immigration process.

In Massachusetts, it's possible to pick any name you want. Not enough details in original question to answer.

You have to choose from any name listed on the MC. You cannot

Ok. You can though.  I think we must be talking about different things.

Nope. Has to appear on MC. Just like any other state.

"May include ANY surname", not limited to...

 

If I didn't see it from my own eyes, I would doubt it, but I did. Twice. Geeky people going for geeky made up names (RtwoDtwo style). 

 

They do have to list which name they intend to use, but they can pick any surname they want, and both spouse do not have to go by the same name. 

 

Without knowing where OP is, probably irrelevant to their wife's situation though.
