hi guys hoping someone can help me out with something I've been researching the last few days to no avail, im moving over on a K1 visa to Michigan soon and im planning on getting a car as soon as possible, I understand I have to get a learners permit first to learn, however I've never driven before and I wanna buy my own car to learn to drive in It with my fully licensed spouse of course in the car with me, however Im really confused about how having my name on the title works and if I can do that with just a learners permit. I'm also unsure on if I can even get insurance with just a learners permit, not a lot of sites have this information for adults, and the ones that do have conflicting information.

Any Help would be much appreciated, thank you

Add the car onto your spouses policy

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Your automobile  insurance agent will know this stuff better than most of us.

Since you coming in on a K-1 visa you should want to own the car jointly with your future spouse.

Not an insurance agent, but I think the what will happen is:

* both names will one on title

* both names will be on auto insurance policy as owners

* since your spouse will be the primary person in the passenger seat while you are learning to drive, both names will be on auto insurance as drivers

If for some reason Michigan law requires a vehicle owner to be fully licensed, then your spouse will have sole title initially, and then when you get your full license, you can be added.

In some states, you can’t get a Learner’s Permit until you have a Social Security Number. So given the above statement, best look into the rules in Michigan and arrange your first few days accordingly.

Definitely. 2 working days after POE and before getting married, a K-1 should always apply for an SSN.

Apply for a learner's permit while there are 60 or more days left on the I-94.

Yeah I have everything up to here planned out, its just a tad confusing relating to an adult getting insurance with most people getting a licence at such a young age

We bought a car when I was AoSing from K1 and had a learners permit in my 30s. Insurance was not a problem - it was arranged just as @Mike E said. Different states and all, but hopefully it’ll be just as easy for you. An insurance agent will be able to help you out! Good luck!

Getting insurance should not be an issue after entry on a K-1, however the issue could be with the documentation to show legal presence to apply for a learner's permit.  Michigan may give you a learner's permit that is only valid until the I-94 date, typically 90 days after entry to the US on the K-1.  Filing for adjustment of status after marriage may not suffice to get either a learner's permit or driver's license in Michigan that extends beyond the date on the I-94.  You will likely need an EAD card or green card for that, which can take many months.  Check these resources:
