Every couple has their own priorities, and each couple must decide which visa is better for their situation.

K-1        
    More expensive than CR-1    
    Requires Adjustment of Status after marriage (expensive and requires a lot of paperwork)    
    Spouse can not leave the US until she/he receives approved Advance Parole (approx 6-8 months)    
    Spouse can not work until she/he receives EAD (approx 6-8 months)    
    Some people have had problems with driver licenses, Social Security cards, leases, bank account during this period    
    Spouse will not receive Green Card for many months after Adjustment of Status is filed.
    A K-1 might be a better choice when 18-21 year old children are immigrating also
    In some situations, marriage can affect certain Home country benefits, making a K-1 a better choice   
    A denied K-1 is sent back to USCIS to expire
    

CR-1
    Less expensive than K-1    
    No Adjustment of Status(I-485, I-131, I-765) required.    
    Spouse can immediately travel outside the US    
    Spouse is authorized to work immediately upon arrival.    
    Spouse receives Social Security Card and Green Card within 2 or 3 weeks after entering the US    
    Opening a bank account, getting a driver's license, etc. are very easily accomplished with GC, SS card, and passport.
    Spouse has legal permanent Resident status IMMEDIATELY upon entry to US.
   

 

 

we had extensive talks about what it would require and we preferred the K1 for many many reasons. The wait will help me prepare my belongings for sale and my house and workshop cleared and put on sale. He will come here for holidays in summer. We will be patient....

I see.  Just be prepared to spend 3-8 months before working or leaving the US.  I wish the very best in your journey.

I am 57. I will be 59 by the time I get my visa. I am a self employed illustrator and clinical hypnotherapist. Not seeking for employers. I am not entirely sure but I think that they cannot stop me working for my clients on Zoom as usual. I know about the travel limitations but I think that after all those months of stress and worry I will need some time to stay in the USA and not go back abroad. I will be fine....

It authorizes you to work inside the US.  You will apply for it after marriage when you apply for the Green Card.

thanks all! it seems strange that I should have to stop working with my UK clients on Zoom just because I am abroad. However I could not find any information about it in any website. I will ask my boyfriend to find out next week - there is time! For example, if a person owns a print on demand store such as Zazzle, surely they are not required to close it until they get a green card? Interesting topic...much to learn for me.

If you were traveling as a tourist maybe .. though online remote working is still considered work .. and working while visiting the US on a tourist visa is illegal. Once you submit the adjustment of status paperwork following your marriage, you myst wait until you receive work authorization .. either the EAD filed concurrently and taking 6-8 months .. or the Green card which will take 12-18 months to be approved   This is one of the most significant negatives of the K1

The US government authorizes who can work while inside the US.  A spousal visa holder is automatically authorized to work upon entering the US.  A K-1 visa holder must apply for and receive an approved EAD.

Oh dear. This is bad news for me. It takes a lot of time for marketing etc to gain traction after stalling for many months!

He is on a journey to see family at the moment so he is not able to join forums. I shall ask if he wants to join so he can follow the conversation - however he is extremely busy with work and hardly has time to be online, so I am the one chasing up this part of the process.

The immigration process requires a great deal of knowledge, planning, time, patience and money....from both parties.  It is a lot of stress for one person to endure.
