We are contemplating a new desktop computer, to replace our laptop. With that in mind, we were hoping to run two 19" monitors from one tower. Can we do that? Do we need a certain video card?

At work, I have a laptop with a docking station and a secondary monitor. This works very well.

At home, we use the computer for video playback, photoshop and internet surfing primarily. No gaming.

What would be suggested as a minimum profile for a new desktop, in terms of: Ram, processor speed, video card and so forth?

We are thinking of Dell, again.

Thanks for any advice.

Yes you can run two monitors from one computer, just need a dual head video card, or video card with two dvi outputs. Low end video cards are not likely to support that, but anything mid range or above should. I don't know if dell will tell you which cards have 2 dvi outputs.

Get a Intel core duo CPU, its the best bang for the buck right now.

1 GB of RAM if your running Windows XP or 2 GB for Vista or if you have extra money.

I would buy as much RAM as you can. RAM for desktops is relatively cheap. Get at least 2, 4 would be great.

agreed. 1 gig is the minimum on this one game i play, so i suggest at least 2 gig.

we just got a new desktop the other day.... it was an impulse buy

one of the selling points for us was that it came with 1 GB of RAM.... we didn't realize until after that Windows vista takes up the majority of that RAM

You can save some RAM by disabling some of the pretty features like Aero and sidebar widgets.

Its the graphics system that makes Vista look all pretty. With smooth animations, translucent windows and that kind of thing. Its a little high in the resource usage side of things and it may not be even available on your computer if you have Vista Home Basic. But you can turn it off my changing your theme to vista basic or classic.

I have (2) 19" monitors running off the cheapest ATI PCIe video card. You don't need dual DVI outputs, one DVI + one VGA will work fine. As long as there is an open PCIe slot, you can put a $35 card in that will give you dual head support (these are more or less standard these days anyway).

buy.com usually has good prices on LCDs.

2 GB RAM is a reasonable minimum these days, though more isn't really necessary for what you want. You might save a few bucks getting the exrta RAM from someplace like crucial.com instead of DELL. Ditto on the extra monitor.

You also don't need Vista. XP is still better for most people, not sure how easy it is to buy a PC with it from Dell though. I use Ubuntu Linux on the PC myself, and MacOS on my Apple laptop. Wife uses an iMac, and a Dell laptop.

The Intel Core2 Duo and AMD X2 are both good CPUs. These days, the speed of the CPU really doesn't matter much. Most of the time (esp on laptops), the CPU runs at less than half speed to keep from overheating anyway. A Dell Inspiron w/2GB RAM and AMD X2 3800 is about $550. Add $180/each for two 19" LCDs.

Hope this helps!

good point on the ram. william should see what the max amount is and what type of chip per socket there is and just max one socket. tigerdirect is another good place for ram too.

Was your last Dell good? I found that many of the Dell's I've worked with have problems shortly after their warrenty expires. I also find it difficult to upgrade/change anything once they do. They've also been known to send bad software, and alot of people don't find this out until their warrenties are over and they are required to purchase new software. So if you do choose a Dell, if an extended warrenty is available I'd go for it, and I'd check and make sure that all my software is included and working.
