Hi guys, I'm currently working on filing the downloaded n400 form, and I have a few questions. I have been married to a USC for almost five years now. But I only have been here for 2 years and 9 months at this point. I am thinking about filing 90 days early.

1) Is it ok to choose yes to "have been living in the US continuously for 3 years" when I haven't? Since I am filing 90 days early, I just want to be sure about choosing yes or no.

2) While completing the downloaded n400 form, I noticed that there really isn't enough space to write down the previous addresses and educational history. So does writing these on separate sheets cause a delay in the case? How did you guys deal with this problem?

3) Apart from the things mentioned on the USCIS n400 checklist, what other documents would you guys recommend having/using?

4) How many of you guys have been asked to answer the definition of some of the words in the n400 form during the interview?

5) Is it necessary to hire a lawyer? I don't have any criminal records nor a ticket. Seems like hiring a lawyer would help but at the same time, it seems like lawyers would take quite some time to actually go ahead and file everything.

6) How do you guys check if you have been registered to vote? I did not vote on anything at all, but I have heard that sometimes people somehow would get registered to vote, and that causes problems.

7) Address change...When we moved, we got lots of things going on, so we forgot to change it. But We did manage to change the address like a month later, would that be a problem?

Thank you guys so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

1) Yes, as you're applying under the 3 years rule.

2) You can include an extra page with all that info as evidence -mention the specific parts of the N-400 they're related to-.

3) None. N-400 is the easiest of all the forms/processes.

4) Didn't get what you mean. 😅

5) Not necessary. Again, easiest of all the forms, 110% DIY. 😊

6) You can check online.

7) No issue.

4) I saw some people saying the USCIS officer asked them what certain words mean in the n400 form.

1. Yes you choose that option even if you file earlier than your 3 year anniversary as an LPR (no more than 90 days prior). NOTE: It's not about how long you have lived here, but about how long you have been an LPR (greencard holder).

2. That's another reason not to file on paper, when you file online you just click "add new job/address" over and over until you have fit all your history. Do not file on paper, online filing has so many advantages.

3. All documents you can think of that proves you're in a bonafide marriage, documents from the entire marriage (since you have been married for a long time, just pick a few documents for each year). You also have the option of bringing documents to the interview, but if you hand them a bunch of documents then, they may not be able to approve you on the spot since they have to go through it all after the interview. So when you file online, upload as much as you possibly can. You can also keep uploading new documents even after you have submitted your application (I uploaded new stuff once a month the last few months I was waiting).

4. I haven't, but in N-400 Facebook groups I have seen a fair share of people being asked to define certain words on the application so the IO can make sure the applicant knows what they're answering on the form and not just click "no" on everything without knowing what it means. Maybe if they notice your English is really bad they're more prone to test you, the whole interview is a test of your English skills.

5. This is the easiest application in your whole immigration journey, especially when you file online. So I don't see why you'd want to waste money on a lawyer for something so simple.

6. I didn't check if I was registered to vote, didn't see the need.

7. No. Just file the application with your new address.

You know you can file this form online?

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Tack så mycket!

1) I have been LPR since the end of November 2018, and I made sure to wait a few days to avoid applying too early.

2) Definitely going to file online since it's faster and more convenient.

3) So, after submitting everything online, you can still upload more documents? Would this cause a delay?

I don't know much about the online filing platform since we hired a lawyer to get the CR1 visa

I saw that Visajourney says to let us upload two identical photos, but the USCIS n400 checklist says to do that if you reside outside of the US. So do I need to upload two identical photos just in case?

Thanks so much for your help.

Start filling out the online form now, you will see how easy it is and pretty much anything you may wonder about will be answered just by going through the online form. It's so easy. The answers will stay for 30 days, if you need more time you just change something little on the form and save, and you automatically get 30 new days. Everytime you save anything the 30 day clock starts over.

Adding more documents afterwards does not delay the processing of your case. Some who have waited for a long time to have an interview scheduled even say it helped their case move forward to upload a document, soon after they uploaded a document they received an interview date. Didn't do anything for me though.

Photos are taken at the biometrics appointment. If the biometrics appointment gets waived, they reuse the old photo or take a new one at the actual interview. So you don't upload or bring any photos yourself unless you live abroad.

I had a citizenship interview recently under 5 years rule and they didnt ask me any of the certain words from N-400 form. Like other have suggested do it your self and file online that way it would be much easier for you to keep a track of every thing rather than waiting for hard copies of the notices. Test it self is pretty easy. They are mainly focused that you have a good moral character and that you didnt lied about any thing on the form other than that all the best.
