What documents do I need to show that I have been paying my rent for the past 5 years even though I cannot find all of my rent stubs? I have the rent stubs, but I have misplaced some. What should I do to address the missing ones? I pay my rent online, so can I provide a copy of these transactions?

I also have some pay stubs from my job that I cannot find. What should/ can I do in that case?

For context: I have been living and working at the same places for more than 5 years.

Why would you need the proof of rental payment and paystubs for last 5 years?

These are the required documents I have read that I need to bring for the interview to show that even if I was outside of the US for while I continued to live and work here (Form M-477, which is old, Rev. 11/21/2016). I actually have only one short trip, but I still want to gather the evidence.

It is always good to be over prepared but you are setting a whole new level if you are gathering such for the entire 5 years.

One trip in last 5 years? If it's less than 6 months long, don't worry about it at all. I had 8 trips ranging from few days to few months (<6).

If the trip lasted for more than 6 months, then yes you can provide such but only for those months you were abroad, not for entire 5 years. Online transaction works, you don't need to look for actual rental bill. You can bring utility bill statements, credit card or bank statements showing any of those transactions.

That's a relief to know. It was a short 3-day work trip to Canada.

Should I provide copies of my native country old passports with the online N-400 application? I am asking about this because I am quite puzzled about what documents to submit with the N400 application. I was asked only for two which I submitted, and then the system notified me that I "should" submit more, but there was no specific list of what documents to include.

I have included:

-NY state ID,

-NYC Id,

-Social security card,

-tax transcripts for the past 5 years,

-green card (front and back),

-divorce paper.

Not sure what else?

If you brought 5 years long paystubs and rental stubs for a 3-day trip,  the CO should escort you to the oath the same hour and hand you the naturalization certificate, no question asked.

Honestly, 3-day trip outside the US? I will say don't even bother yourself with gathering a single rent pay receipt.

Sure; go for it. Personally, I wouldn't bother.

I wouldn't worry about a 3 day absence. The maintaining residence part only really kicks in if you took a trip over 180 days to 1 year without getting a re-entry permit and even then you only need to prove that you were maintaining ties to something in US (work, family, place you live, etc) during that trip and the record of it doesn't have to be extensive.

Regarding what to submit, refer to the N-400 instructions. There's no point in me paraphrasing the list.
