Hi there,

New LPR here. Ticked the box to receive a SSN on DS-260, been here a while, hasn't arrived (although my green card has), need to start setting up my life.

After reading others' experiences, I've been in touch with my local social security office to get a face-to-face appointment. Happening this week.

My question is: can they tell me my SSN at the appointment, on the spot, or do I need to wait for my card in the mail whenever it arrives?

As you can imagine, I just need the number to begin doing things. Thanks very much!

They cannot tell you on the spot until everything is verified

YMMV

Thank you. Is "verification" something that they can do on the spot, or something that happens once I've left the building?

It can take 2 days to 2 weeks

YMMV

Thank you. Do you think it's worth scheduling a follow-up appointment, while I am there, to come back to the office two weeks later? (Again, I'm keen to know the number as soon as possible so that I can move forward with bank accounts, work, etc.)

Certainly something I would not deem as needed.

I'm not sure they book appointments in person either.

YMMV

Wait for the SSN card to arrive in the mail.  After 2 weeks, if it hasn't arrived, call SSA.

Some have returned the next day and received a printout of their assigned SSN. They will not give it to you over the phone or by email. Ask up front how this works before they get into the application. My person told me had they known in advance, they could have given me a printout of my record next day but they didn’t enter something before submitting. No clue what they mean, but my card arrived within the week.

Admitted on 3/15 still hasn’t come. Called up, agent on phone said it hasn’t been created yet. Also am I entering the receipt number from the immigrant fee to check on the green card? Please help. Thanks in advance.
