Hello Visajourney memebers,

I filed I-130 for my mom July 2020 and got approved 2 weeks ago. Now her file is at the NVC. I already paid for the visa fees, but wanted to ask about what "civil" document I will need to submit for her. Right now I'm uploading document for her, but I am stuck at the passpost page because her passport is expired, so she needs to renew it. The civil document pages with instruction comes after the passport page but I can't get to it yet... I wanted to save time by renewing her passport and obtaining the civil document for her simultaneously.

So what exactly is the required civil document? Where do I need to go to obtain it?

Or could someone please point me to the correct thread for instructions for the NVC stage? Thank you!!!

I'd like to add that she's currently living in Vietnam. Thanks!

Per the DOS site for NVC, you are at Step 7:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-5-collect-financial-evidence-and-other-supporting-documents/step-7-collect-civil-documents.html

Click the "Document Finder" link on that page (It is embedded in one of the sentences).  That link will get you here, where you can select the required documents for Vietnam:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Visa-Reciprocity-and-Civil-Documents-by-Country/VietNam.html

Unfortunately, that page does not list the specific documents you need for IR-5 visas, but  does explain where you can get the various documents.

@Liam2021: hi Liam! Where can my mom go to get the police cert? Can she go the nearest police station where she lives (which is Saigon)?

No, she have to go "So Tu Phap" to get it.
