I guess I can't pronounce my name. I leave a work-related voice message and almost everyone who returns my call looks for Danielle. Which is so different from my real name.

I say "strawbries" instead of "strawberries". My WI wife says "ruff" instead of "roof".

Oh my god, my husband says "ruff", too, but he's from Iowa...

I have trouble differentiating between the "w" and "v". Also, I can't say aluminium right, but the, who can?

You know, the same thing happens to me, people don't understand, ask me to spell my name, and Vanessa is a common name here in the States. It gets even worse when I say Nessa.

Hubby gets weird looks every single time he asks for 'water'. He keeps reminding me it's not 'wadder' like we Yanks say it.

And at Starbucks, if he says 'I'd like a tall bold please' they always say WHAT? like 4 times. He'll give up & say ok, 'a drip coffee'.

Let's reverse this concept for a moment...

I have been working on Bahasa Indonesian for 5 years and have finally realized a decent grasp of it. However, I still struggle heavily with proper enunciation of certain words.

For example:

Panjang Tangan (translated: long hand or thief, inside joke here.)

When I say words with n and g together, it gets garbled big time. My wife gets a kick out of it though.

I have learned that from birth, we develop our language skills with specific movement of the mouth in the process. Even breathing plays a significant role. If one does not learn that style of speaking early in life, one will struggle to get it right, unless they are exceptional with language abilities.

With that said, I have met people in my past employ that can speak 5-6 languages fluently. By fluently, I am referring to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) 1-5 Scale.

1 = basic words and conversation, while 5 = Native tongue.

Fluency is achieved at the 4 level.

All of my educational language was in Latin..I guess it helped with English.

Anyway, I have struggled with several languages, but I try hard.

I suspect our foreign spouses do also.

Any thoughts on a USC learning a foreign language?
