How far ahead can I get the documents required?

How far ahead can I get the military/criminal records and other records needed for the DS-260? We are in the process of filing the I-130. I am a US citizen and I live abroad with my husband. We are in the process of gathering all the documents required. I would like to know if we can gather the documents for the DS-260 as well or if we should wait until we are closer to filing that?

Police report have a limited validity and should be gathered closer to the interview

I agree, I would wait until the application reaches the NVC stage before I would start getting the time sensitive information.

Yes, wait until the I-130 is approved.  If no longer in the military, you can get those records anytime along with everything else.
