Hey, so I've been in the US for 50 days now as a new LPR. Despite being here for two months now, I haven't received a SSN even though I applied for one.

I'm going to be back in Lebanon in like two weeks for a couple weeks - 1 month maximum. I'm going to need a SSN ready before I come back to the US. So I saw you can apply at FBU Italy for a social security number that you then obtain from the embassy in Lebanon. However, in the inquiry form (https://it.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/fbu/fbu-rome-inquiry-form/) they're asking for my SSN to apply for a new one -_-

https://it.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/fbu/faq/ On the FAQ section it says that you can apply for a SSN if you've never had one through the inquiry from. So I don't really understand what I should do. I'm scared of writing something like 0000 as the last 4 digits and then clarifiying what i mean in the remarks, cause it's probably illegal.

Do you realize SSA offices have been closed due to covid? Have you called in case they have remote staff working? I’m not sure why you are looking to obtain a SSN abroad when you are now a resident.

I literally just explained. They do have remote staff but I'm going to be flying in just before two weeks, and I need my SSN before flying back.

Don't want to be the elephant in the room: But have you received your physical Greencard yet? That's what you really need to return to the US. I've read there have been delays with those, so just making sure.

I am not sure what the urgent need is to get a SSN while abroad, but since you applied for one all you can do is wait until you receive it. You can call and ask if it has been processed yet, but that's about it.

Hey, Yes I have received my green card. It's for University purposes (financial aid) and possibly a job. I called the nearby SS office and they said they haven't received my immigration information due like many who immigrated during Covid.

As I recall the FBUs no longer process initial SS5 requests.   They do accept requests for duplicates which can be sent back to the FBU.

Oh, I see. Do you think it is possible to get a SSN in less than 2 weeks if I apply today or tmrw? Or should I just not try my luck?

You said you already replied for one - it will take it's time, but you should just wait it out. Many are in the same situation.

What you certainly DON'T want to happen is that two applications of yours are being processed, and you end up with 2 SSN. Cleaning up this mess will not be easy. The SSN is your unique identifier in the US and pretty much being used for everything later on.
