Hello, just a question

I have been documentarily qualified for f4 immigrant visa awaiting embassy interview.

I have 7 years left on my b2 tourist visa and I would like to know if I would be able to visit my family for the remaining of summer until my university classes resume in August in my home country Jamaica.

You have a valid visa so yes you can visit. Visitors are never guaranteed entry to the US - it’s up to the CO. No one here can tell you if you’d be let in. Currently the US is allowing B2 visitors.

I have a friend who is here on a B2 visa. However, when he travelled home, he was turned away at LAX because all international flights to his country were cancelled till October. I want him to perhaps go to school or work. Is there anyone out there with a similar situation, and is it possible to apply for a different visa like work or student visa while on a B2 visa?

Thank you

Well - he can’t “just apply for a work visa”, he needs a sponsor.

he can apply for a change of status to a student visa, but he cannot study until it is approved. There is often a timing problem with change of status to F1 (and if timing is out he will be denied), and obviously he needs to be accepted by a school first. Change of status historically takes 4-6 months to be adjudicated, it could be longer now. He should understand that if he is denied, he will have his B visa voided and have to leave immediately.  It’s quite a big risk to take imo, as the chances of another non immigrant visa after that happens are probably very low.

curious what country is this, I haven't heard of anywhere closing borders that long. (And curious as to why the airline didn’t contact him before he arrived at the airport?)

It may be a better idea for him to travel to a country from which he can enter his by road or rail. (Unless it’s an island obviously) are you sure there are no repatriation flights?

Islands will have sea transport.

No.  There's no available visa for him to apply for.

He needs to contact the Embassy/Consulate from his home country for a repatriation flight and for information.
