...as for the issue of humor being offensive - of course it is subjective, but I think if someone is offended and they have a legitimate reason why they are offended, then people should respect that. I've been thinking about posting a thread of outrageously offensive jokes to demonstrate that every one of us has a threshold of what we find offensive. I personally would not try to post any jokes here in this immigration forum that pokes fun of someone's religion or race...using discretion on a public forum is a reasonable thing to do, IMO.

Here's an example of a joke I would NOT post here (as an example)

I agree with you also Steven...problem is, many would see that as a violation of their right to post whatever they please, regardless of its content, lack of tact, etc. Using discretion or in some cases being tactful and respectful, on a public forum is ideal but I don't think it will ever happen.

The other problem is that there is a wide variation of what people would describe as untactful. Posting a joke like Steven's example there is obviously offensive becuase it points to a very specific nationality and is very vulgar in nature. You'd be in the minority if you didn't think that lacked tact in an immigration forum. On the otherhand if you are posting harmless jokes that are based on very broad scale stereotypes, not aimed at anyone in specific and not including strong sexual references, you'd be in the minority thinking it was too untactful to post.

Some people here believe that you should avoid posting anything that anyone at all would find offensive. When you get right down to it, this would exclude many jokes that have been posted through the years here, and of course many political posts that have been posted as well. I for one am glad that we haven't gotten to that level of restriction because this would be a pretty boring site if we did.
