How Long to Get SSN?

I sent my wife's adjustment of status application on October 26, 2019. On December 6, 2019, she had her biometrics taken.

When can we expect to receive her social security number (SSN)? In the application, we requested one for her.

The reason I ask is because I'm waiting to file my taxes and she needs an SSN (I'm trying to avoid needing to apply for an ITIN).

Is there a government website or phone number I can call to check the progress of our application?

Should I expect to receive her SSN before the April 15 tax deadline?

Don't expect one until getting EAD or green card.  You can: 1) file MFS and write NRA  for her SSN and amend later using 1040x or 2) go the ITIN route or 3) pay the taxes (if any) and get an extension to file.  You can get 2 extensions that last thru October 15th

If she didn't apply within the first 74 days of her I-94, she will only get it after EAD is approved, in 4 to 6 months.

Thanks for help guys. Looks like the best route will be obtaining an ITIN after all. 😕

Stateside is easy - Download the W7 form and submit it with the passport and tax return.

Wait until the end of the filing deadline just in case you get the SSN.
