Hey, regarding the new "self-sufficiency" law, do I have to file a I-944 form? Does it apply to me since I have already filed before that law was established?

Also how is it possible to get an SSN number before getting my EAD

It's tax season and my wife cannot file as married because their forms ask for my SSN, I visited the social security office multiple times but I failed to get an SSN because to their claim, my k1 visa's due is expired..

If you filed before it was effective then you don't need to file the I-944

She is married.  She files married.  Options:

She can file Married filing Separate and write in NRA as your ssn.

You file together and include the W7 and passport

You calculate the tax due and pay it and do an extension thru october

Thank you so much!

It's a relief to know that it doesn't apply to me

Oh I have to file taxes too? Is it possible all things considered that I don't have my EAD and I couldn't work?

Are there more instructions somewhere online on how to file my taxes? Or file it with my wife? I never filed American taxes and I'm completely clueless how it works.

And what does it mean to have an extension thru October?

Edit: it's appears to be that my wife has already filed the taxes on Single since she was unable to file based on married, now that it's filed, is it irreversible?

We're planning to ammend it next week, is that a good approach?

You are a household member.  If were married then you and your wife can file together.  ( a benefit of being married)  Can't tell from your (missing) timeline, nut if you worked last year in your former country that income would need to be reported.

Taxes can be  computed online.  I recommend using a tax service if you have things like foreign income to be excluded. In any case, between the two married options, a paper filing will need to occur.

Full taxes are due and payable on April 15.  Extensions to file can be used to extend the filing deadline until October 15th.

Your wife can also file on paper and amend the return later.

I didn't work in 2018 as I was doing mere minimum freelance work online, and I didn't work in 2019 due to my illegiblility to work, so I'm not sure how I file my part of the taxes since I don't really have much what to file or at all so I'm not entirely sure how is it going to work..

And huh! That's a cool fact that you can extend it to ever until October!

If you file jointly you get the extra $12,000 + deduction.   You don't have to work.   It is like being a housewife err househusband.

Wait haha what? I get tax return of my own all things considered as wasn't able to pay any taxes throughout the year?

Getting free money like that sounds silly, is this really how it is here?

Welcome to married life in America.  Probably the only freebie worth getting married for.

I got to claim Mary for our first year and she felt weird about that too.

Thats so wierd! It almost feels wrong!

Where would that tax money return come from? Does it come from the government or other tax payers? Wouldn't that be considered public charge?

It is a deduction and not a credit.  Just think as it is the same thing as being married and one spouse stays at home or doesn't work.

No.

Ohh! Here I was thinking that aside from my wife already getting tax return, I would also be getting tax return as if I made $12000 this year, but from what I'm understanding, they are just deducting from my wife's tax return, that's understandable I assume.

Than you so much! We're are going to try and correct her tax return hopefully already next week!
